I bought this mount to use for astrophotography. I was looking for something that wasn't as heavy as my other EQ mount and easier to transport. After doing an extensive amount of reasearch on mounts in this range I settled on the Celestron Advanced Series CG-5GT. Not only after using a discount code did Telescopes.com have the best price for the mount[...] I don't use this mount for anything other than Astrophotography so this review will be focused more on using it for A.P. I am using this mount with about 20lbs of equipment and it seems to track very well with that amount of weight. For visual use it can be used with about 35lbs - 40lbs of equipment not counting counterweights. You really don't want to exceed 20lbs worth of equipment on this mount if your imaging though, anymore and it will affect the quality of your guiding and tracking. I love how easy the goto alighnment procedure is. If you spend a little time making sure that the stars are centered in the eyepiece and you use the optional calibration stars your goto's will be dead on every time. I haven't had any issue's with centering faint galaxies and nebula that I want to image when doing the alignment right. The alignment procedure is very easy, even someone that has never used an EQ mount with goto technology shouldn't have a hard time learning how any of the features in this mount work. One of my favorate things about this mount is the All-star Polar Alignment feature. The fact that you dont need to see Polaris and if done correctly your mount can track unguided for 30 to 120 seconds is great for a beginner. You can take some amazing images without an autoguider in those times even more so if you stack your images. Accurate Polar Alignment is crucial to taking long exposure images and instead of doing the ever so time comsuming and boring task of drift alighnment you can perform a polar alignment that if done correctly will get you extremely close to the North Celestrial Pole, just as close as drift alignment which you need to see stars that are close to the horizon and not all of us have that kind of view from our backyards. I highly recommend that you do your research before using this feature to get the best results. There are tricks to getting this mount to have a perfect polar alighnment and goto's that aren't explained in the manual. Another great feature I love is the fact that this mount has an autoguiding port. A lot of other mounts in this price range do not. I have noticed that with doing an accurate All-Star polar alignment and having an autoguider running you can take those long exposures of those little faint fuzzies that end up not being so faint and fuzzy anymore! The only issue with this mount that might bother people is the fact that it sounds like a coffee grinder. It doesn't bother me at all but some people aren't to happy with it. It's also not a heavy duty high class mount so don't expect miracles, but for the price and after using those high class mounts It really doesn't dissapoint for what it is. The mount is sensitive to balancing and weight issues when it comes to using it for astrophotography so keep that in mind if you plan on imaging with more than 20lbs of equipment "not counting the counterweights." All in all I have had great results with this mount. It is very important that after making the purchase you hop on the internet and soak in all the hints that people have posted about getting the most out of the features it comes with. Once you know all the little extra tips this mount won't fail to please. It's a great performer for the price tag and it's proof that you don't need to spend thousands on a mount to get your feet wet in astrophotography. I would without a doubt make this purchase again, Thanks Telescope.com!!!!

I was pleased with most everything about this mount. But, not being able to track reliably in temperatures from mid-30s to mid-40s F makes it useless for astrophotography or for simply using GoTo functions for viewing in winter months. Drives stutter or freeze completely. Searching online I found many have had issues with the grease used by the manufacturer, a tacky lubricant that stiffens in mildly cold weather.Great.I will not attempt to dismantle, clean out, and relube with something better. Paid good $$ for this, and don't have that kind of extra time.Very disappointed, had I known I would have sucked it up and paid for a more expensive mount for this purpose. [...]

Great mount, but not without problems

Comments about Celestron CG-5 Computerized Telescope Mount:

I think we all agree that this mount has the best bang for the buck. However, it does come with issues. When I first powered on the mount, the controller would start to slew to the first alignment star, then it would stop and initialize. I would have to start over again. This got to be nerve racking. After some hair pulling and digging on the forums at cloudynights, I found that others had the same issue. It turns out that the cig adaptor and/or the cord were not allowing enough power to the mount. Replaced with a 12v power supply (make sure you get one with 5.5mm x 2.1mm end) and wha-la, the mount now tracks with no interruptions. I'll be sending the power cord back to Celestron with a note to fix this issue. Anyway, now that I'm tracking OK, I noticed as it gets colder, that the motors seem to strain a lot harder, and get noisier. After some further research, it turns out that the gears either had little or no grease, or the grease was that Chinese "sticky" grease. I found that after dismantling the head (WARNING: don't do this if your not mechanical or don't want to void the warranty), that it was full of this sticky, almost like tree sap, substance in the worm gear casing. Cleaned everything out, greased everything with a good can of marine grease, made some pain staking adjustments to the ring nut, worm shaft and gear mesh, and low and behold, the mount slews great in cold weather and is not as noisy. The motors definitely sound less strained. But, this is not for the faint of heart, and I would recommend taking it to a specialist. If you have a smaller telescope, you will probably not have any issues with this. However, if you approach the maximum specified weight, you may have issues with tracking and slewing with the sticky grease.

Would I recommend this to a friend? Yep! You can't beat the price, so with that in mind, and with a little work, this mount will perform excellent for many years to come with care and maintenance. Who cares if you have to spend $15 bucks or so on a power supply, your still ahead with this mount. Now, if I can just get these clouds to clear, I'll be in heaven.

Comments about Celestron CG-5 Computerized Telescope Mount:

I have been using this mount since the summer of 2008 in different locations. Great value. It performs the way it should be: reliable and precise. Just be careful with the wiring as in some instances it could get caught between the casings. One piece of advise for first timers: open the box carefully, get the instruction manual out and immediately close the box and study the instruction manual (yes study the instruction manual). Everything will come naturally after that. Enjoy and share clear nights.

Comments about Celestron CG-5 Computerized Telescope Mount:

The mount is very very solid. I was a little worried given the low price, but it's nicely constructed. Comes double boxed. Includes weights and dovetail bar. Uses the same Celestron goto software you see on other mounts. Was debating between this and the iOptron, but I'm pretty happy with the CG-5GT. The tracking motors are a little loud, and could be a bit smoother.

It's fairly large, but can be reasonably portable. Not too heavy either (without the weights). Practically, you should have to disassemble the head from the tripod for transporting.

But overall, given the price it's probably the best mount at this price point.

        Customer Q & A

        1 - 5 of 8
            1   2

Q1: Is this product the mount only or does it include the tripod shown in the photo?

A: Yes the tripod is included with this package. It is for the full tripod and computerized mount.

Q2: Is CG-5 Computerized Mount suitable for up how many kGS telescope? Can I use it for 10 inch newtonian telescope?

A: Yes, the CG-5 mount will hold a 10 inch newtonian reflector. I will say that i would think that is the maximum size telescope for this mount, and it will offer a sturdy platform. Celestron offers their 10 inch reflector on the same mount. This mount should be just fine for your scope.

Q3: What would I need to adapted my Telvue 85 to this mount?

A: You will need the Great Polaris Mounting Adapter SKU # AGP-1009 you can find it in the Vixen brand under mounting accessories

Q4: How much Telescope weight it can hold without sacrificing performance?

A: This mount can hold up to 30 pounds.

Q5: This product can be adapted to GPS to achieve a simple alignment?

        A: That is correct.
