Astronomy is the most demanding use for binocs and these are as good as you'll get short of image-stabilized versions ($1,000) or MAYBE high-end Zeiss (over $1,000). Attributes desirable for astronomical observing: 10 x 50 (more resolution and color from doubles with 10x compared to 7x), BaK4, Porro prisms, center focus, light weight (2 lbs) - this model has all of these, plus wide field (8.5 degrees - a lot of binocs are 5 degrees). You can obtain a tripod and adaptor or just use a lawn chair (chaise longue) with your elbows propped on the arm rests. These binoculars have, also, enough focussing range so I can use without eyeglasses (I have high myopia - 10 diopters - and not many binoculars can do that). Without the glasses and therefore without the ambient light, a sweep through the Milky Way with the Ascot is a spiritual experience. It's a lot of fun just to hunt down Messier objects and open clusters especially are more impressive than in a telescope (with narrower field).

Great binoculars, well built. As a prelude to telescope purchase, based on previous reviews, expected better star gazing ability. Nevertheless good binoculars.

I was happy to find these reasonably priced binoculars with a wonderful focus of the sky. The light weight was an added bonus, and the extra wide lenses were perfect to begin my interest in astronomy.

Comments about Vixen 10x50mm Ascot Super Wide Astronomy Binoculars:

my order was shipped fast and hayneedle was perfect. The lenses have a good crisp view. the lens caps for the eyepieces are perfect but the objective lens caps are too loose. oh well. I think that the lenses on these should be fully multicoated. Its not very expensive and I would have gladly paid 10 or 15 dollars more. That being said these are the only binoculars I could find with a 8.5 deg. FOV
Which is what you need if you want to hand hold 10x binos for any length of time

Comments about Vixen 10x50mm Ascot Super Wide Astronomy Binoculars:

Did my homework and went with vixen. First clear night, I was absolutley amazed with the improved visibility and clarity of the moon and stars. I am hoping to familiarize myself with the night sky before investing in a telescope. I am pleased with the comfort and ease of use that these binocolars provide.
