Q5: What binoculars would you recommend for a combination of at home use and hiking/backpacking use? I'd like something that has much stronger magnification than my little Minolta 8x25's. Was looking at the Nikon Monarch 10x42? I want it for looking at wildlife, looking at the mountains 30-50 miles from my house, (and being easy to focus, from one person to the other.)
A: Nikon's 10x42mm Monarch ATBs are a great all-around choice. They're light, powerful, rugged and have nice optics for binoculars in their price range. Both Monarch 8x42s and 10x42s placed in the top 10 among mid-price binoculars in the 2005 Cornell University Ornithology Lab's binocular reviews.
