I was a little disappointed to learn (after purchasing) that the foam was not pre- cut for my scope, but lined with the pluck foam that you modify yourself. There are essentially four layers of foam in this case: the bottom is lined with a firm layer of flat foam, the top is lined with a firm layer of finger-foam and there are two equally thick layers of pluck-foam in between.
I was also disappointed to read that this case was for the optical tube only, not the base. Not true...
With some careful planning, I was able to comfortably and securely fit my optical tube and base in with room for my vibration supression pads, my SkyFi and my Diagonal/EP.
I did it by leaving my OTA and Base attached to each other. By loosening my optical tube, sliding it to the mid- point on the rail, then rotating the corrector plate/lens cover down facing the base. I the put one layer of the extra pluck- foam between the lens cover and the base/battery cover and slid the two together with the foam as a cushion between them. I then tightened the optical tube nut back down making this combo about as small a footprint as possible.
In this configuration, I removed the top layer of pluck foam, laid the scope/base on the lower layer of pluck foam and marked the outline on the foam that I needed to remove and reoved an area just slightly smaller than I thought I would need. I then placed the scope/base unit in the cut-out area to check for a snug fit. Counting squares, I removed the same outline on the top layer of pluck-foam. This top layer was actually too tight in this configuration so I removed some more foam to make a perfect fit. Once complete, there is now enough room to remove more foam to accommodate accessories.
Once I finished this project, I couldn't be happier with this super durable case.

This case is very rugged and durable, so that's a plus.
However, for the amount this case costs, I think it is unacceptable that the foam is not pre-fit to your telescope. You get a solid block of foam that you have to tear to make a rough approximation of the shape of your scope.
I'm not sorry I bought this case, but if I had to do it over again, I'd go with another option.

Comments about Celestron Hard Case for NexStar SE Telescopes:
I bought this case to protect my 8SE OTA and mount. After reading on a few other websites how people were able to fit both in even though it says "only for OTA," I decided it was worth giving it a try. It worked! It is a very durable case that feels well constructed and strong. I wish the foam was pre-cut for the scope, but with a small amount of planning you can get a perfect fit easily.
To fit the OTA and mount together, I simply keep my OTA attached to the fork arm, put it in a vertical position with the eyepiece up and then slide the OTA down almost as far as it can go (I leave my finger there to allow a little spacing. I slide some of the padding between the bottom of the OTA and the mount, have a couple of other pre-cut pieces of padding beneath the fork arm to make sure there is no movement, and pad just beneath the finderscope as well (it easiy fits if you turn the the whole thing slightly when you put it in. Once I had it exactly where I wanted it, I strategically glued the large pieces of foam to each other and also the foam to the inner wall of the case. Now there is no movement at all when removing or replacing the scope.
Do take care when you remove the foam that you don't take out too much. Do it in small increments, test, then remove more. You will be very happy with your results if you do. Once everything was finished, I took out a little bit of extra foam to store my focal reducer, level, and star diagonal. Great purchase. Maybe a bit expensive, but very happy with the protection it brings to my investment. Recommended for sure!

Comments about Celestron Hard Case for NexStar SE Telescopes:
The case looks beautiful and is pro grade. Unfortunatly it is only 9 & 1/4 inches deep and does not pad well the 8 inch Nexstar SCT in depth; a compromize for the many other benefits it has. Would work brilliantly with 6" or lower, or be the most excellent transport and storage box for all your fragile stuff. The two layers of sponge protection on the depth give only a mere 1/4 between the instrument and the hard case. Too tight for me to trust to ship in, or take as luggage on plane and I can never stack anything on it when the scope is in the case. 3/5 Stars.

Great for Celestron NexStar 8 SE & computerized base. Has room for a few extras. Die cut foam was not that much trouble to remove to fit the scope & base."O" ring makes it water and dust proof.
Service and delivery comments:
Prompt delivery. Case arrived in great condition. Tracking number was a great help knowing the arrival date.

Q1: I no longer have the foam that came in the original CGE mount packaging - is there anyway to still use the case? Can Celestron provide this foam?
A: Generally it will not be a problem for you to get replacement foam from Celestron for your case. Just contact them via e-mail on the customer service section of their website. The other option would be to purchase some egg shell cushions and form them to fit the case yourself. If you have any other questions let us know we are happy to help.
Q2: I have a NexStar 8i. Does the case hold the telescope and tripod? Will the scope fit with the GPS and finder still mounted?
A: you will need to remove the finder and GPS when putting it in the case and no the Tripod will not fit in the case either.
Q3: Hi, do I have to cut out the foam to make my Celestron SE8 fit? Does this case fit my tube assembly and mount or just my tube?
A: The foam in the Celestron Hard Case for NexStar 8SE does need to be cut to fit the optical tube. This case cannot hold the tube and the mount. It is designed for the optical tube only.
