Description

The thing to do about dew!

Celestron's C14 lens shade/dew cap is a tube of approximately the same diameter as your telescope's tube. It's designed to fit on the front end of the telescope to reduce the amount of dew that builds up on the corrector plate, ruining your view, and possibly your scope. At the same time, it serves as a lens shade, preventing stray light from falling on the corrector plate. This also greatly improves the view.
Celestron's lens shade/dew cap: it's what to do about dew (and bright sunlight)!

This product is made of good material except for the lettering which are poorly attached. This products quality is in it's simplicity. It is easy to use, easy to store away (flat), and actually enhances your scopes appearance because of it's sleek look. The only slight drawback is that you must connect the Velcro while it is partially fitted on the scope and, of course, near the corrector plate. In other words, you cannot connect the Velcro and then push it onto the scope. It must be wrapped around the scope first. This is a slight problem for me because I do not like to be fumbling around near the corrector plate where inadvertent damage can occur even when installing a relatively trivial item.

The main motivation for buying the lens shade/dew shield was to protect the corrector plate on my SCT from dew and stray light. It does those jobs well.

The additional benefit I didn't anticipate was that it really protects the corrector plate from inadvertent contact from others, as well as a whole host of other potential unwanted contact. I won't use my scope without it. Without the shield my SCT feels exposed to potential hazards.

It is decent for the $$ but it could use a better device for fit around the tube. No matter how tight I try to get it, it is still loose somewhat. The lettering came off in the bag it was shipped in which was somewhat of a let's say, indication of what was to come maybe. The inner part of the shield could use a padded material like the AstroZap dew shield for absobtion of moisture rather than the use of nothing. But for [$]I will not complain too much as long as it does it's intended job. I would recommend the [...] dew shield over this one.

Comments about Celestron Telescope Lens Shade/Dew Shield:

I live in an area where dew is an issue, and I bought a Schmidt Cassegrain scope, which means dew will be even more of an issue. For both dew delay (dew shields delay, but do not prevent, dew -- for prevention, invest in dew heater straps and a controller) and blockage of stray terrestrial light rays, this shield is a must have.

I love the notch cut into the front of this shield, which is perfectly sized for the dovetail on my Nextstar 8SE.

I wish there was a wider strip of Velcro inside the shield, which would allow me to expand the size of the shield and fit it around a slightly larger cicrumference. Because the Velcro strap is not larger, I cannot install my dew heater strap directly around the corrector plate (if I want to use the dew shield, that is), but have to place it on the main body of the OTA, an inch or so from the corrector. Not sure how that will limit the heater strap's ability to prevent dew.

Highly, highly recommend a dew shield to SCT owners. This particular shield will serve you well.

        Customer Q & A

Q1: Would this Lens Shade/Dew shield work for the Celestron FirstScope 114 EQ Short Newtonian Reflector I bought from here last year?

A: Unfortunately, the Lens Shade/Dew Shield made for the C9 scope would be way too big for the FirstScope 114.

        Q2: I have a Firstscope 114 / 4.5" Newtonian Reflector Telescope. What I need to know is. Do I have a c5, c14? How do I know which c I have?

A: The Celestron FirstScope 114EQ is a member of the FirstScope series and does not carry the "C" designation. The "C" is reserved for scopes in Celestron's Advanced Series. If your scope were a "C," it would be a C4.5.
