Description

LVI SmartGuider 2 Imaging Control System

The LVI SmartGuider 2 Imaging Control System (ICS) is a major improvement respect to the stand-alone autoguiding SmartGuider camera.

Although the camera hardware is pretty much the same, the improvement is involving the internal firmware and a new external device called MGA included with the camera.

In addition to the usual stand-alone capability offered by the SmartGuider, the new SmartGuider 2 model features more flexibility thanks to the expanded advanced menu which allows new functions - as suggested by users - for an optimal guiding performance in any situation with any setup.

  • Full control of DSLR cameras such as Canon, Nikon, Pentax and Sony
  • Full control of motorized focusers (a stepping motor fitted into the focuser is required) with temperature compensation and absolute positioning
  • Special autoguiding port featuring an opto-isolated output with non-simultaneous corrections to the RA and DEC axes (Losmandy non GoTo users)
  • Dedicated Meade Autostar autoguiding port for LX90 and LXD55/75 telescopes

Stand Alone Autoguiding with the LVI SmartGuider 2

  • Stand Alone Autoguiding with minimum effort
  • Small, light, and tough, minimum power
  • No laptop necessary
  • Easiest handling - no PC skills required
  • For almost every Guiding-Port

The "Stand Alone Autoguider" is the tool many Astrophotographers have been waiting for a long time.  A Controlbox not bigger than your hand, a cable, a focusing eyepiece and a camera head - all that fits into a small case.  But still, this intelligent Guiding-Electronic replaces the function of a Laptop with Guiding Software and CCD Camera entirely.

Can you operate your Cell Phone?  Then the handling of the LVI Smartguider using the small handcontroller is just as easy.

The LVI SmartGuider 2 opens a new area for DSLR photographers

No extra weight, no enormous power consumption and no problems with chock sensitive drives, with humidity and low temperatures.  The LVI SmartGuider 2 completely replaces your laptop.

The LVI SmartGuider 2 Imaging Control System goes beyond the simple concept of autoguiding.  Astrophotographers know well that autoguiding is vital for obtaining clear and crisp long-exposure photos with pinpoint star resolution, but that's not all...  Final images are the result of a complex process handled by different devices which must all work together flawlessly in order to get the desired photo quality.  But in most of cases, the process isn't flawless.

The LVI SmarGuider 2 Imaging Control System is an integrated solution which does the whole process required to make wonderful astrophotos in a very short time and in a fun and easy way.  No longer do you need the laptop, the reflex remote switch, the focuser control and other gadgets in the field:  the elusive beauty of the Universe will now just be a few clicks away from your dreams.

The MGA Device

The LVI SmartGuider 2 Imaging Control System comes with the special MGA device which takes the full control of your imaging equipment (mount, DSLR and focuser) to deliver the best result out of your telescope.

Advanced Reflex Control

The REFLEX section managed by the MGA device controls a variety of Canon, Nikon, Pentax and Sony cameras by handling the same parameters that are usually managed by commercial software

  • Exposure with single shots
  • Bracketing - When switched on, the camera automatically takes a new sequence with an exposure as shorter as the stop down set.
  • Number of shots
  • Pause between consecutive shoots - for sensor cooling
  • Mirror lock-up - to avoid vibrations caused by the mirror flip prior the shutter release
  • Dark framing - When switched on, the camera automatically takes a new sequence when the telescope has been capped.
  • Delayed start - When switched on, the camera starts to capture images after the set time has expired
  • Statistical info - Two windows with all parameters displayed

Advanced Focuser Control

The FOCUSER section managed by MGA device controls Baader Steeltrack and Starlight FeatherTouch focusers.  The MGA supplies power to the motor through 3xAA batteries placed inside the MGA unit.

  • Focuser models selection from an internal database
  • Automatic calibration for absolute positioning
  • Temperature compensation with an external thermo probe
  • Temerature coefficient self-learning in an automatic way
  • Permanent saving of one T coefficient
  • Manual adjustment of the T coefficient
  • Statistical info with parameters

AutoStar & Losmandy users

The new autoguiding port in the MGA unit features an opto-isolated plug and non-simultaneous corrections to the RA and DEC axes useful to get a perfect autoguiding also with the old Losmandy #492 digital drive.  Furthermore, the dedicated AUTOSTAR plug makes the autoguiding possible also through all Meade mounts with Autostar #497 (LX90 and LXD55/75 as never before!

Advanced Autoguiding

The LVI SmartGuider 2 Imaging Control System allows better control over more useful parameters to achieve the best results in any conditions.   New options are:

  • Dithering - allows a small framing displacement between Reflex single shots when activated.  This will remove cold pixels (black "holes" in the raw images) out of the final image when dark frames are removed and the subject is perfectly stationary in the same portion of the imaging sensor.
  • Pulse Guide - sets the duration of the corrective pulse.  Together with the AGGRESSIVENESS, this parameter helps in better tuning the right correction to the mount avoiding dangerous overcorrections.
  • strong>Threshold - allows for a hot pixel removal by adjusting the background noise level.  Pixels having an ADU value lower than threshold value are not considered by SmartGuider 2 camera while searching for a guide star.  This avoids hot pixels beeing considered as fake stars.
  • Max Exposure - sets the max exposure limit to adjust the camera sensitivity and reaction.
