Description

The Meade #1244 Electric Focuser eliminates focus-groping forever. This power-focusing unit attaches easily and quickly to your ETX90 or ETX105 telescope and provides smooth, vibration-free and precise focusing at coarse and micro-fine speeds. On the ETX-90EC and 105EC, the focuser plugs into, and is powered by, the telescope's control panel, with operation through either the Electronic Controller or Autostar hand box. The standard-equipment hand controller accepts one (user-supplied) 9-volt battery and focuses the ETX-90 and ETX-105 Spotting Scopes.

The hub on the brass gear that slides onto the main focus shaft fits inside another plastic piece that
bolts on the scope. Of course that's where the allen nut is that needs to be tightened on the shaft. However was able to squeeze included allen wrench just enough to tighten nut. Intructions read that flat side of gear (away from scope) should be flush with end of shaft. Gear sticks out past it slightly.
With that said, Focuser stills functions well. With the EC models, The cord can be plugged into an AUX port on scope so the hand controler that came with the scope can be used to operate focuser.

It pretty much does what it says it does. However, it could be designed better. On my ETX-90PE, the housing brushes up against the fork a bit while aiming near zenith - I'd prefer if it didn't touch, as it may affect goto accuracy. Still, the benefits are clear - its much easier to achieve a fine level of focus without jostling the tube, especially when aiming upward.

Comments about Meade #1244 Electric Focuser for ETX-90 ETX-105 Telescopes:

great for focusing, has multiple speed focus and takes away the vibrations caused by manual focusing, however the casing is a little snug when the tube is at the 90 degree angle.. and i think if it was auto tracking to an object directly overhead that the focuser would rub against the arm and mess up the tracking.

Comments about Meade #1244 Electric Focuser for ETX-90 ETX-105 Telescopes:

The electric focus, Meade #1244 is A MUST for the ETX owner. I used the steel cable but it is not practical when pointing to zenith. I really don't know why it took me so long to purchase this nice device. With this price is a joke not to purchase it. Just take it easy during the installation not to tight hard the long installation screw, take it easy, if not, the gears will grind because something will be not so well aligned. Also, when setting the brass gear to the focus shaft, make sure to first turn the focus counterclockwise several turns, to make sure there is space to insert the allen wrench to the setscrew on the gear. I just wasted time trying to do it, until I realize the focus shaft moves out on CCW. Also, set the gear flush with the end of the shaft. Apply some (little) grease to the gears. Don't use the controller that comes with the device, use your #497 controller. Press "0" to gain access (up/down or left/right) to move the focus. Press 2 to slow, 5 for medium and 9 for fast). Press "0" again to return control for the motors. You can also press and hold "MODE" for two seconds to get the same control. I prefer to use "0" instead, since it also turns on the red LED on the #497 head, and then you know you are controlling focus instead of the motors... neat coincidence.

Plug the device coiled cable to the "EXT" port of the scope base. Make sure to keep an eye for cable tangling when the scope is turning several degrees.

It takes a while to learn what direction to turn, but it is easy to learn. You will love the unit and will never go back to manual focus... It is amazing, scope doesn't bounce anylonger when adjusting focus.
