    I bought this because the laptop I use for Astrophotography and controling my mount with planetarium software didn't have an rs-232 port. Your going to need this if you own a Celestron mount and plan on controlling it with a computer that dosen't have an rs-232 port. Also, if yuou plan on upgrading the firmware in your hand controller your going to run into the same issue if you don't have an rs-232 port.
    Everything you need is in the box BUT you have to make sure you already own the cable that attaches to the hand controller otherwise this is useless!! Once you own that cable all you have to do is plug this little guy into the rs-232 end of hand controller cable and the other end with the usb into your computer. Your going to have to also install the included driver before anything else though. Once you have everything connected properly you can now control your Celestron mount and upgrade the mounts firmware also.
    I highly recommend this item because if you own a Celestron mount that doesn't have the latest firmware you are missing out on some great features like ALL-STAR Polar Alignment which in my opinion is an incredible feature.

This seems an added expense which you are more than likely going to need at some point. The price is a bit high. Just doesn't seem fair to almost being forced into this purchase when it could of easily been included.

    This cable works great for my Celestron 8SE and Stellarium control with my computer. Unfortunatly it does not work for updating or flashing your hand controller (HC). Using HCupdate program downloaded from Celestron I have tried to use it to load firmware 4.18 on HC to run Stellarium. It does not work and confirmed from several others on Astronomy forum I use. Fortunately I had an old computer with a serial port and used only the cable that came with the telescope (no USB), worked like a charm. You still need this to connect to a more modern computer for control
