I want to say that I had a CG-4 mount before and that I was sorry that I got rid of it. I plan on keeping this one because there are alot of different scopes you can mount on it.

Comments about Celestron Omni CG-4 Equatorial Mount:

After 5 months I am ready to review. This mount was purchased here along with the motors and polar scope. Easy to set up and put to use. Remember to unscrew the whole polar scope mount and screw the new one in. After searching two other website manuals (Vixen GP, Skywatcher) you can get all the setup info needed for using the setting circles as well as polar alignment. I have used the polar scope and have checked it with Kochab's clock, as well as using the time dial and it is dead on. Remember also that the circles are accurate for short distances (they are smaller than 8 inches) so use a known setting near your destined viewing location, set the circles then find your object. I use the motors as well as remove them for manual viewing. I also have wired in a ST4 plug for auto guiding. The rear cover that covers the polar scope ocular does com loose. This is minor and is easily fixed with a piece of felt stuck on the inside of the cover. I currently use an AR102 and am highly impressed. You can adjust the backlash for the gears until you get smooth travel with the motors. For the money this cannot be beat. Adjustable, sturdy, portable, accurate.

Comments about Celestron Omni CG-4 Equatorial Mount:

and I thought this would be great. First the really good thing about this is that it is very sturdy. There is no movement or shaking of the telescope when viewing or fine tuning.
Now the not so good. Poor directions, even on-line. There are features that are not explained anywhere. What good are the calibrated rings for? (Probably someone with more experience would know) Below the R.A. guide marks there is a black gizmo with 3 set screws with a hole there that doesn't even show up on the sales literature. There are some type of calibrated rings that we can't figure out what their use is. In the photo it is covered with a plastic slip-on cover. One of the fine adjustment movement is jerky and not smooth. And lastly, for the real novice, this thing does not swivel 360 degrees. So if you're viewing one end of the Milky Way and want to view the other, you pick the whole thing up and move it where you want to look. Neutral on recommending to others.

Mounted on a 12 lb Sky-watcher ED100 Refractor. Balances well with larger counterweight. Smooth movements. Heavy and solid. (consider heavy a plus.) Well made. Might purchase a ten percent improved product at twice the price. Hard to believe something so substantial could be so well priced. Even the few nonmetal parts are solid. Mine has a minor fit problem with the plastic cup over the polar alignment scale interface.

Comments about Celestron Omni CG-4 Equatorial Mount:

I purchased this mount for my Meade 6 inch F5 Schmidt Newtonian optical tube assembly, and the mount handles the scope very well. I wanted a mount that was light enough to move the entire assembly with telescope attached without getting a hernia. The mount meets that requirement while at the same time providing a firm stable mounting platform. The slow motion controls are very smooth. The only downside is that the polar alignment scope and motor drive are optional. But then again the price is still a bargain even with the additional cost of these options. If you purchase the motor drive make sure you adjust the gear backlash on the mount (included in drive instructions) for smooth performance. If you do not do this the RA drive motor can induce vibrations from gear lash into the mount which degrades the sharpness of high magnification views.

Comments about Celestron Omni CG-4 Equatorial Mount:

This is an update as I added the ra and dec motors. I have some backlash in dec which I'm trying to adjust out but ra is very smooth. As I use it more I seem to be getting more usable 45-60 sec deep space images at 300mm with unguided tracking. My total imaging setup weight is 13.4 pounds. The attached image of the Orion Nebula is a set of 9x45 sec and 12x60 stacked images taken with an unmodified Nikon 50 and 70mm-300mm Nikkor lens at 300mm.
For a total investment of $420 for the mount, polar scope and motors, no autoguiding and no go-to capability, I think it is working well.

Comments about Celestron Omni CG-4 Equatorial Mount:

I purchased this to mount my AT72ED telescope and associated gear for viewing, planetary imaging and eventually, deep space imaging. The AT72ED weighs 5 lb without anything attached. I intend to experiment with eyepiece photography which will add several pounds. I also plan to add the motors (modified) and a small guidescope for guided deep space imaging. I expect the final total weight to be about 12 lbs. While balancing the scope, I discovered that the telescope integrated vixen style foot is too short to balance in declination with the focuser tube fully extended. That's not a mount problem though. So far, I'm pleased and expect it to meet my needs.

Comments about Celestron Omni CG-4 Equatorial Mount:

I liked this mount from the moment I've opened the box. It took me about 15 minutes to assemble the whole thing, which is very good comparing to other mounts I had before that arrived in zillions little pieces and took forever to assemble. So after I put CG-4 together, it showed that it really means business. It is built like a rock with very steady steel legs and head. When I put my Astro-Tech AT6M scope on it which weighs about 16 lbs, the whole thing worked smoothly without wobbling or shaking at all. All mechanisms work like supposed to. Fine tune Dec and RA knobs as well as bubble level are a good addition that help to align the mount quickly. It is definitely worth the money. Good job Celestron!
