Good value for a small telescope

Comments about Explore Scientific Twilight I Alt-Az Mount with Tripod:

I was looking for a lightweight alt-az mount for "grab n go" that included slow motion controls. This mount was slightly challenging to assemble as the instructions were incomplete - thankfully the Orion website had a downloadable manual for a similar mount. I wish it were slightly more stable when the arm is positioned at 60 degrees from vertical (this is for viewing the zenith). But I suspect that would double or triple the price. When the arm is vertical, my C5 fits perfectly, even at 90 degree elevation, so this is an ideal mount for that small SCT scope. It also works fine with an 80 mm refractor. I cannot imagine this mount being satisfactory for a 100mm or larger refractor, or anything larger than a 6 inch SCT or MAK.

Comments about Explore Scientific Twilight I Alt-Az Mount with Tripod:

    Greetings,

Assembly was quick and easy. Strong and durable and actually quite stable. During the test runs I installed a SkyWatcher PRO 100ED. This is a 10 lb OT without the diaginal or Ep. Light vibration while skewing but very quick recovery once you have centered your object. I have a couple of EQ Mounts one with a Go To Function which is great for planned nights out in The Hills. But for a quick grab and go for things that come up for the backyard not very practicle. This mount fits the bill nicely and I am quite pleased with the purchase.

    Regards

Comments about Explore Scientific Twilight I Alt-Az Mount with Tripod:

Built with quality and ease of use in mind. I knew it would stable with my AstroTech 72mm, but was apprehensive about trying it with my 6"Intes Mak/Cass. No problem at all. The tripod legs are spread wide enough apart that I'm not at all concerned about it possibly tipping over. The slow motion controls are smooth with either scope mounted. I have noticed absolutely no stiction. I'm very happy with this mount. I waited almost 5 months for an AstroTech Voyager I ordered from another company...and it was still nowhere in sight of arriving, so I cancelled my order and purchased my Twilight I. Glad I did!

Comments about Explore Scientific Twilight I Alt-Az Mount with Tripod:

The design of the leg portion is similar to Celestron SE mounts where a solid plate spreads the tripod legs apart. This is more durable than the plastic legs used on other mounts (I managed to break the triangular plastic spreader portion on my Astro-Tech Voyager after only a few uses). Design, workmanship and controls on this mount are excellent. Doing a direct field comparison with the Voyager mount, I found the Explore mount to be more stable.

Would rate it as a five except instructions are lacking. One printed page dealing with the shaft holding the head onto the tripod. I have one part left over and have no idea where it might be used.

Comments about Explore Scientific Twilight I Alt-Az Mount with Tripod:

This is a good mount and tripod. It's light yet strong. One drawback: no assembly instructions! However, Orion sells the same mount and they do have instructions on their Web site. Also, Explore Scientific has a 1 page explanation of two "frequently asked questions" on assembly. The micro-adjusters are smooth and allow the observer to follow stars and planets easily. The torque required to swivel or move the mount up/down is adjustable with the small black handles. You can torque down the mount this way also so it won't move when changing eye pieces. A platform under the mount can store 2, 1.25" and 1, 2" eyepiece which is nice.

          Good Alt Az Mount

          By Retiree

Comments about Explore Scientific Twilight I Alt-Az Mount with Tripod:

This mount works fine with my 13# 102mm refractor. Some vibration is present when focusing or touching the scope, but dampens out quickly (less than 2 seconds) with the tripod legs fully extended as well as when retracted. Slow motion controls are good & precise.

Recommend it as a good grab n go mount that won't break your back.

Comments about Explore Scientific Twilight I Alt-Az Mount with Tripod:

Have a Vixen Porta II mount for a couple of years and decided to try this Exlpore Scientific (ES)version as well. Am very glad I did. If I can trade in my Vixen Porta II mount for another one of this ES, I would. The legs are stronger. The whole tripod is more stable due to its lower profile and more widely spread legs than the Vixen. And it is shinier and better looking overall than the Vixen to boot. However, the Vixen does have 3 things ES doesn't have: 1) Two Allen wrenches included, 2) Padding of the flat section of the round rotating horizontal head in case the telescope hits the head hard, and 3) The accessory tray has a lip to prevent eyepieces and such from rolling and dropping to the floor.
