Description

Introducing the iOptron ZEQ25 - An extraordinary new innovation in mount design.

The new iOptron “Z” design mount puts the weight of the payload at the center of gravity allowing for greater natural stability. Given its payload capacity, this means the “Z” designed mount is unusually light—a nice benefit when setting up at a remote site. Other features include an adjustable counterweight bar to prevent obstruction with the tripod. And polar aligning is quick and accessible all the time since the polar scope is not blocked by the declination shaft.

The ZEQ25 is equipped with the most advanced GOTONOVA® GOTO technology, making it one of the most powerful and accurate GOTO mounts available. Its database includes over 59,000 objects—its Go2Nova® Hand Controller is intuitive to use and its large 4-line LCD screen simplifies the process of setting telescopes and locating objects. The ZEQ25 – a new category of viewing and astrophotography.

Comments about iOptron ZEQ25 Equatorial Mount:

Great entry level CEM (Chinese Equatorial Mount) with smart design. But there were a few weak points with my copy. First the tripod legs spread out unevenly and to far that resulted in the central three point spreader assembly being unable to make a postive connection to all three legs at the same time. This was corrected by applying metal shims to each leg at the contact at the base. The polar scope is good but difficult to read without getting on your knees, the fix was adding a ADM extension tube. The polar scope cannot be aligned as is, this was corrected using a spacer supplied by V5, but check the alignment first before applying any fix, it maybe good enough as is. The saddle is nice and small but can prove tricky at times resulting is the tube slipping, this was corrected by replacing it with a ADM dual mount. The bubble balance is really a pain to read due to the location and size, this was corrected by attaching a two axis bubble level design for camera hot shoe application. See photo. I noticed some tracking issues when the tube is pointing straight overhead, this maybe due to imperfect balancing. My copy had some issues in this area, in that even with full release of the tensioners and disengaged the locks, there were friction points. I suspect the telescope was over tightened by the previous owner who may have returned it to the store where I purchased it or a refurblished at the factory. No correction for this issue to my knowledge, short of factory service.

        Brilliant engineering, flawed ergonomics

Comments about iOptron ZEQ25 Equatorial Mount:

Conceptually, this is a brilliant design. The mount moves smoothly and tracks accurately. The hand controller is better than most and yet flawed by over simplification of its software and lack of features found in most other hand controllers.

Comparatively, The tripod is incomprehensibly weak, light-weight, short, and not very stable considering its premium price.

The mount has 4 knobs that you are required to manipulate during setup. Two are tiny, slippery with almost no grip surface and must be manipulated with just the very tips of your fingers. These two tiny knobs lock and unlock the axis and are referred to as "gear locks". There no indicators, other than faint tactical feedback, to tell you whether you're in a lock position or an unlock position. According to the manual these knobs are in "locked" position when vertical and "unlocked" when in horizontal. In practice I found it very difficult to determine when the axis was locked or unlocked.

Two other knobs adjust pressure ("tension adjusters") to the drive mechanism. They are knurled and of reasonable diameter but very short making it a challenge to turn, especially if you have larger fingers. You can only apply the very tips of your fingers and you must rotate these knobs numerous times during setup.

Throughout the packaging, quick start manual and product manual you will find a warning you that you must use these two set of controls in the correct order or you will damage the mount.

I found the latitude adjustment to be a superb design and easy to use. The azimuth adjustment is typical of all equatorial mounts - simple and effective.

Physically the hand controller is satisfactory. The buttons require a firm press and the connecting cable is notably short. There is no holder for the controller - just a loop of string for hanging it from a convenient protrusion on the mount.

The GPS is a problem. For me it didn't work. Even though the controller indicated it was on, the date, time and location were never updated. I did some research and learned from other's experiences that the GPS antenna is blocked when the telescope is in its home position preventing reception of any satellite signals.

During initial setup you must enter the offset of your physical location from Greenwich Mean Time (GMT or UCT) in **minutes** !?. Other mounts allow you to select a city, a timezone, or at least let you enter this value in hours. This just seems half-baked.

To select an alignment star you are presented with a very long list which you must scroll through and its your job to decide what to use. Other mounts present you with a list ordered by best choices for your date, time and location. Again, half-baked.

Once aligned, the mount has very accurate gotos and very accurate tracking. It is fairly easy to locate objects in the catalog and have mount find them.

Overall, the mount is brilliantly designed and highly capable but flawed by numerous ergonomic and design issues. The weight capacity of 27 lbs is highly questionable. Half that is probably realistic.

I can not recommend this mount for children due to its complexity or as a first mount for someone starting out. Due to the short tripod it will be challenge for a normal adult to find a position in which to observe anything beyond a minute or so.

For what you get it seems awfully expensive.

        The future of astrophotography mounts?

Comments about iOptron ZEQ25 Equatorial Mount:

Ok I'll start off by saying that this mount is not a normal EQ mount, the fulcrum is balanced on ball bearings across the axis. It moves unbelievably smooth, with RA and Dec balance so sensitive you can shift it by extending the draw tube or adding usb cables, this is fantastic because it drastically improves you ability to autoguide with precision. Try balancing like that on any celestron mount, it's not going to happen because their axises are so stiff.

This mount replaced a CG5-Gt for me and I picked it over a higher capacity IEQ45 or CGEM purely because it guides so amazingly well. I don;t really need more capacity than this mount has to offer so I am completely happy with it's capabilities.

Another egg in the basket that sets ioptron apart from the rest is the fact that you can have just about any replacement part mailed to your door instead of going through an RMA routine. It does not void your warranty to replace a motor or stripped gear yourself! That alone had me sold on this company.

Now for the cons, I would like to first say that ioptron has very good customer service so if you hit any of these issues they can be easily fixed. The mount can have a few problems out of the box, the encoders can have bad crosstalk which prevents the mount from responding very well to slew commands, the RA axis can have a bit of play in it, also my handcontroller had a dead battery in it which will mess up your goto capabilities until you replace it. As I said ioptron will help you fix all of these problems, or you can mail it in to be adjusted.

Other than the stated issues this mount is pretty dang impressive, I have never seen autoguide graphs like what I am getting from this mount, smooth and very precise. It is very easy to push guiding limits to atmospheric seeing interference. Also there is such a larger user group for this mount you can easily discuss and tweak this mount to spec from the advice of other owners. Definitely pick this one up if it meets your requirements.

Comments about iOptron ZEQ25 Equatorial Mount:

The mount was everything I hoped it to be. Now I can wear it out. Buying online worked very smoothly, I couldn't have asked for a better experience. The only time I went outdoors was to bring the packages in.
