Comments about Sky Watcher Sky-Watcher AZ-4 Alt-Azimuth Mount:

    Sky-Watcher (Celestron) AZ-4 Alt-Azimuth Mount

For under $200 this Alt-Az mount is a GOOD buy. The tripod is very similar to the one supplied with Celestron's CG-4, but without the built-in bubble level (the Alt-Az painted areas are also black and the CG-4 is painted white). The mount is solid and moves smoothly in both axis. Mine is paired with an Explore Scientific AR102 which balances well and is rock steady. I bought this mount assembly over other brands primarily because it comes with an azimuth setting circle and an altitude scale, both of which work very well. One bad point though, and why I give it only 4 stars, is that the azimuth setting circle is graduated for the Southern, not the Northern hemisphere (China is in the Northern hemisphere isn't it?). This can be somewhat remedied by removing the azimuth tension knob, bearing/washer assembly and the mount arm, to turn the setting circle ring upside down. This works OK, but the pointer on the arm is then not close enough to get an accurate reading on the individual degree tics. However, a close estimation can be achieved. A good point with regard to the azimuth setting circle is that it can be turned in either direction for adjustment. This allows you to start with a rough North alignment of the tripod, and then by sighting in on a known star and checking its azimuth on a planetarium application, you can then move the azimuth setting circle to the coordinate indicated by the application for your time and location. After that, you can then get the Alt-Az coordinates for any visible object in the sky and swing to it. Doing this, I was able to get every object I dialed in on within a couple of degrees of my finder's cross-hairs. To get the altitude scale calibrated, you need to first make sure your tripod is leveled. I also double-checked for level with the level mounted in the mounts dovetail bracket and the pointer set to zero degrees, 45 degrees and 90 degrees. All three were dead on. This mount assembly is light weight, yet still rock solid and steady. For my visual purposes it is a perfect setup for my AR102 as a grab-n-go mount. I highly recommend this mount to anyone wanting a good Alt-AZ setup for a good price. ("We are star stuff. We are the consciousness of the cosmos." Carl Sagan)

Comments about Sky Watcher Sky-Watcher AZ-4 Alt-Azimuth Mount:

I have the Orion Versa go II, and the vixen Porta II
and now this one. If you understand the limitations of an alt-az tripod this one is about as good as it gets. The Orion uses the adjustable split leg design
and the clamping pieces are plastic, already had a wing nut come off one leg which ruined that night. The brass threaded insert in the plastic just pulled out with not much force at all. Not good.
The Vixen Porta II mount uses the split leg design too, but its sturdier and no plastic, I use
this one on my Celestron SC 6" f10 and use the slow motion controls and it works very well.
The AZ-4 uses stainless steel tubular legs, with no plastic anywhere. It by far is the most sturdy of the 3. The only plastic I see are the friction control knobs and are well made. Very smooth in its articulations. This one is the heaviest of the 3 which no doubt helps in steadiness. If you are in the market for an alt-az tripod I would recomend this one.
