The Meade 8-inch Equatorial Wedge will eliminate field-rotation effects when you're using your 8" LX200 telescope for astrophotography.
You can do astrophotography with the LX200 scopes in the standard altazimuth mode, but with longer exposure times, an effect called field rotation becomes evident. Stars at the edge of the field will appear as small concentric arcs or streaks on the film, rather than as star points. This effect, which does not relate to the accuracy of the telescope's computer or internal alignment, occurs on all altazimuth-mounted telescopes. It's simply a side effect of the altazimuth-type mount itself.
Preventing Field Rotation
To prevent field rotation, your 8 Inch LX200 can be polar-aligned with the wedge. The wedge allows you to align the telescope's axis of rotation with the Earth's rotational axis. And this eliminates the effects of field rotation and gets the star streaks out.
An alternative to using a wedge is employing the field de-rotater. The de-rotater allows you to stay in altazimuth mode and correct field rotation for longer-exposure astrophotography and CCD imaging.

Comments about Meade Equatorial Wedge for 7/8 inch LX200:
This is a very study wedge and works perfectly on my 8" LX200. Initial set up takes about half an hour but after that it is very easy to put on the telescope mount and take off if desired. Holds telescope well. It took me a little while to figure out the instructions that come with are not for the 8" LX200 wedge (perhaps an older model?), but you can download the correct instructions from the Meade site. Comments about Meade Equatorial Wedge for 7/8 inch LX200:
I'm using this wedge with a 8" Meade LX200-ACF scope. The construction of the wedge is sturdy and doesn't wobble. However, the parts included did not match the included instructions at all.

Q1: Just getting into this again (after 30 years). Is the wedge an accessory necessary for an LX200 10" GPS? And do you recommend UHTC coating on all of yoru products? Is UHTC standard with the LX200 8" or 10"?
A: The wedge is not a neccessary accessory but a good one to have none the less. UHTC does not come standard with the scopes. It is recommended though as it will gather 20% more light than a scope of the same size without it.
Q2: If I bought the wedge, would I have to get counterweights as well?
A: It is a very good idea to make sure that when you are using an equatorial wedge you have enough or get more counterweights as it will cause the scope to lean back which can make it off balance as the weight of the tube is then in the back instead of eveny distributed over the tripod. The counterweights will allow you to comfortably use the wedge and not ahve to worry about the balance.
Q3: Does the wedge come with (3) mount bolts to provide additional securing to the tripod. Do you all sell the rosette knobs/screws to attach the scope to the mount?
A: The wedge comes with three mounting bolts equipped with plastic knobs for easy tightening.
