Description

The Meade Ultrawedge for 10/12/14-inch LX200 and RCX400 Model 07008 telescopes will eliminate field-rotation effects when you're using your telescope for astrophotography.
You can do astrophotography with LX200 and RCX400 scopes in the standard altazimuth mode, but with longer exposure times, an effect called field rotation becomes evident. Stars at the edge of the field will appear as small concentric arcs or streaks on the film, rather than as star points. This effect, which does not relate to the accuracy of the telescope's computer or internal alignment, occurs on all altazimuth-mounted telescopes. It's simply a side effect of the altazimuth-type mount itself.

Preventing Field Rotation:

To prevent field rotation, your LX200 or RCX400 Model 07008 telescope can be polar-aligned with the wedge. The wedge allows you to align the telescope's axis of rotation with the Earth's rotational axis. This eliminates the effects of field rotation and gets the star streaks out.
An alternative to using a wedge is employing the field de-rotater. The de-rotater allows you to stay in altazimuth mode and correct field rotation for longer-exposure astrophotography and CCD imaging.

Comments about Meade Ultrawedge for 10/12/14 LX200 and LX400 Telescopes:

It's a solid wedge that keeps the telescope nice and stable. The azimuth adjustment is a little sloppy, but I was able to polar align my LX200 very rapidly with no difficulties.

Comments about Meade Ultrawedge for 10/12/14 LX200 and LX400 Telescopes:

This is truly a big addition to a telescope. I have a 12" Meade so it has to be big. The picture doesn't make it look as big as a childs small carseat. It appears to be well made. There must have been small changes because I had to improvise slightly with the installation instructions. Not a big deal. Very solid.

Comments about Meade Ultrawedge for 10/12/14 LX200 and LX400 Telescopes:

Kind of pricey for what it is, but I'd hate to try and make something to hold up $10,000.00 or more worth of equipment.

        meade ultra wedge

Comments about Meade Ultrawedge for 10/12/14 LX200 and LX400 Telescopes:

For all of you who sent in reviews or plane too, this is for you. I have the old super wedge and I love it. I sent it out to have it meachined and its a 1000 times better. the clunk that you are refering to is due to the fact that meade or ( the lowest bidder who made this wedge)fails to check spechs and take time to meachine the wedge. Yea overall its a good thing.

        sloppy threaded rod issue

        By Brian- S.FL.

        from Undisclosed

Comments about Meade Ultrawedge for 10/12/14 LX200 and LX400 Telescopes:

Although I have not used the wedges before this ultra wedge, I can not compare the two. So what I have noticed with this Ultrawege is the DEC and RA knob movement is sloppy. When ever I am rotating the wedge up its tight and ok, but once I rotate it downward (with gravity) it drops what seems to be an inch but with a very hard clunk until it is rotated enough to pass the point of the "loose play" in the thread then it grabs and moves decent. The RA does the same (with gravity) but not as bad as the DEC.
