I was pleasantly surprised when I opened up the pkg. This eyepiece had a couple of features that are not shown in the photo. It has a rubber eye guard and the zoom ranges are marked at 8,12,18,&24mm. It also comes in a very nice hard plastic case with a screw on top. The optics are very nice for this price range. The zooming feature allows you to determine how much magnification is usable with your seeing conditions. This really allows you to maximize your viewing time. I found the zooming to be extremely smooth (with no clickstops) and almost parfocal throughout the entire range. Only slight focus adjustments were needed in the higher mag range. I found the eye relief to be extremely comfortable(very pleased with this). I was really surprised at how well it barlowed. Using my 2x and my 1200mm fl scope I was able to get up in the 300x range without much degradation of the image. (first time I've been able to actually see festoons and swirls in Jupiter's cloud bands). Overall, I'm very pleased with this eyepiece. It exceeded my expectations and I can see that some nights this may be the only eyepiece that will be used. It is an excellent EP for the beginning or intermediate level astronomer. And the price is right!

In order to appear objective here, I'll try to list some cons with this EP. Keep in mind that I really had to think long and hard to come up with these, as I didn't find that they were that big of a deal to me. So here goes. The eye guard is a stiff rubber and didn't completely block out stray light from a nearby street light. No biggee there. I'll just use a different viewing spot. At the highest mags, I did noticed some very slight distortion at the very outer edge of the FoV (but not as bad as I expected). At the highest mags the 40° FoV is narrow but again not as bad as expected. While the views aren't as clear as a fixed fl EP the benefit of using just one far outweighs the difference in my opinion. For ease of use and pricing, you can't go wrong with this EP.

I purchased the Celestron 8-24mm zoom eyepiece instead of buying multiple eyepieces for my Bushnell 100mm Mak-Cass. Since this eyepiece costs roughly as much as a single fixed eyepiece, I figured it was a decent purchase. As a beginner, I find this to be a bulky eyepiece, especially in comparison to the 25mm one that came with my scope. It feels like a small SLR lens when held. Not shown in any of the manufacturer images are the markings on the side annotating a few key zoom focal lengths including 24mm and 8mm as well as two inbetween. As well, as mentioned by other reviewers, there is a large rubber eyecup that has been rolled down in the image. This rubber is relatively soft and is easy to roll back up or down. The zoom motion is relatively smooth, and can be done with one hand once the eyepiece is screwed in place. The field of view is reported as 40-60 degrees- it appears that at 24mm it is at 40 degrees and at 8mm it's 60 degrees. The field of view is limited at 24mm, but is acceptable for me- objects will stay in the FOV for a while. Unfortunately, when it comes to optical quality, this eyepiece is below par. It offers grainy views, even at 24mm, and these only worsen by 8mm. I find it hard to obtain clear views, even at the best possible focus setting of my telescope. The eyepiece is not as good as the 25mm eyepiece that came with my telescope, and that is an average eyepiece. While I enjoy using this eyepiece and find it extremely convenient, the views offered at higher magnifications simply do not reveal any higher level of detail than my eye could discern at 24mm- they just make views bigger. I would recommend this eyepiece for travel purposes, but not for long intense viewing sessions.

Comments about Celestron Zoom Telescope Eyepiece 8-24mm - 1.25 Inch Format:

This is my go-to eyepiece for viewing the night-sky objects.

      The Good:
Now I don't have to change eyepieces to zoom in on an object. The price for this zoom is decent considering the zoom feature takes the place of a few eyepieces if you are willing to sacrifice some image quality for ease of use.

      The Bad:
The optics of stand alone eyepieces (at set focal lengths) is superior to the zoom eyepiece.

      Service and delivery comments:

Delivery was within a few days of order.

The product arrived with no defects.

What I know so far, the zooming mech could be smoother difficult to focus at 8mm vibrates when adjusting zoom especially with a barlow it definitely brings objects closer which is what i wanted it to do. saturn is 9.4 AU away and I could see many of her moons and the poles. eye piece is comfortable which is nice. over all i am pleased and i live in an area with a lot of light polution im going to try some filters and see what objects i can pick up.

Comments about Celestron Zoom Telescope Eyepiece 8-24mm - 1.25 Inch Format:

I have been into astronomy for over 50 years . I was looking for a good quality zoom lens that I would not have to take out a loan to buy. After researching all the options, I found the Celestron rated with lenses costing three times as much. I have now used this on my Celstron 8" SCT, my 120mm refractor and my 60mm Lunt Solar Telescope with excellent results. The feel and quality is excellent. Great resolution at all powers. Highly recommended.
