Description

The Meade 8-24x Zoom eyepiece is part of the famous 4000 Series. Incorporating seven-element, multi-coated optics, these eyepieces are the gold standard in telescope oculars.

The Meade 8mm-24mm Zoom eyepiece is a great addition to any telescope. At the same time, it offers the widest-possible field of view - 55 degrees at 8 mm - consistent with pinpoint edge-of-field sharpness and long eye relief. It also produces extremely low astigmatism, spherical aberration, and off-axis color. Incorporating seven-layer multi-coatings and edge-blackened optics for optimum image contrast, it permits levels of optical performance generally impossible to achieve with eyepieces having fewer elements.

CHOKING HAZARD - small parts may pose a risk to children under 6 yrs.

Comments about Meade Telescope 8mm - 24mm Zoom Eyepiece 1.25 Inch:

I have the Z10 Dob, which comes with the generic 9mm Plossl and 30MM 60'. The Meade Zoom is great for someone on a budget, who wants the versatility and portability of many eyepieces in one.

This Zoom is a Jack of All trades, but a Master of None. It works better with a larger field of view at higher magnification and smaller field of view at lower power, which is the opposite of what you might expect. This EP excels at planetary viewing, but I wouldn't recommend it for low power work.

This EP is great for scanning the skies at low power, then zooming in on your target without losing it out of field of view. One thing to note is that unlike more expensive Zoom EP it's not parcoal, which means you must refocus when you change your magnification power setting.

In reality you will likely step down or up slowly and refocus as you go and any focusing adjustments will be minor.

Comments about Meade Telescope 8mm - 24mm Zoom Eyepiece 1.25 Inch:

I really like this lens. No more switching lens and loosing the object because the field of view has shifted. On the other hand there is only one dust cap on the telescope end leaving the viewing end to dust and whatever.

      Customer Q & A

Q1: The Televue 8mm-24mm zoom stops at 8mm, 12mm, 16mm, and 24mm. Does this stop at the same places, or does it stop at every degree (as indicated by the hash marks between the numbers)?

A: This eyepiece can be used at any focal length between 8 and 24. It will turn to any degree between 8 and 24.

Q2: What is the difference in quality between using this zoom eyepiece as compared to using individual eyepieces of the same focal length ? Should one buy a couple of individual eyepieces as opposed to buying this?

A: The advantage to this eyepiece is that it gives you a range of eyepieces all in one. Buying them individually will allow you to get the precise levels of magnification that you want where with this your option is just form 8mm through 24mm. So if the ranges of eyepieces that you were looking for were in the range of this eyepiece then the zoom is not a bad choice at all.

Q3: Is this eyepiece parfocal, i.e. can you zoom without re-focusing, or do you constantly have to adjust the focus as you zoom?

A: It is not a parfocal eyepiece you will need to adjust the focus as you change your magnification.

Q4: I have a Meade telescope (the etx90?) and though some images seem magnified a bit, it is no better than a pair of binoculars - is it the eye-piece?

A: The Meade ETX-90 telescope ships with a 26mm eyepiece that will produce about 48X magnification with the telescope's 1,250mm focal length. That's not much more than a good binocular can produce. An eyepiece of a shorter focal length will increase the magnification of the scope. For example a Meade 4000-Series 6.4mm Super Plossl ocular will produce about 195X, which is about the maximum you can expect to use consistently with your scope.
