Description

PENTAX Corporation is pleased to announce the introduction of the smc PENTAX XW series of eyepieces designed for use with PENTAX-brand spotting scopes and telescopes in ground and astronomical observations. Consisting of eight models with a focal length ranging from 3.5mm to 40mm, the new XW series features a wide apparent angle of view (70 degrees), JIS Class 4 weather-proof construction and a long eye relief (20mm). The new optics, incorporating high-refraction, low-dispersion lanthanum glass elements and PENTAX-original multi-layer coating, delivers bright, high-resolution images with minimal aberrations and distortions.


The new XW series retains all the popular features of the current XL series, including eyepiece shape, while upgrading many vital specifications. All XW models feature a 70-degree apparent angle of view, delivering a more dramatic, wide-perspective image than the 65 degrees of the XL series. Laminated optical elements are treated with the innovative partial coating, which offers much higher light transmission capability than conventional full-surface coating. Thanks to advanced computer simulation technology, internal reflections are drastically reduced to produce brighter, clearer images.

    I'd already owned the XW14, and wanted an EP with just a little shorter focal length to complement it. Images in the XW10 are sharp across the whole field using my 8", f5.9 Dob, and there's a great sense of being immersed in the view. And with 20mm of eye relief, if you have to wear glasses (like I do), the Pentax EPs just cannot be beaten.

      In my F/7 AP 155MM refractor, these Pentax oculars showed better edge shapness than some of my TeleVue Naglers and Panoptics. Nice construction and great coatings.

        Pretty much same as my other review(s) for this great line of eyepieces. It's been a terrible winter for observing. In the few times I have been able to get out, this eyepiece has been a remarkable performer - I've used in in both my FS-128 and my TEC 160ED and it has allowed both optics to show their stuff. Very crisp and clean ep's, fov very flat (no barrel or pincushion distortion), and color rendition very nice - not really warm or cold - no added color. Great on planets as well as globulars and emission neb's planetay neb's... really everything my scopes will resolve. Great light transmission for having so many lens elements. Very easy eye placement - just twist up eyecup and then move to desired optimal - and so very comfortable to use. Build quality very nice, solid, will last... I think these are an eyepiece to buy with confidence is you are a fan of the ~70* field of view - which is my favorite for framing many objects. As a last comment I only use tracking mounts - and this is an extremely pleasing eyepiece to sit back and drink in the view.
