Description

The development of the Explore Scientific 100° Series Nitrogen-Purged Waterproof™ Eyepiece was a collaborative effort of astronomers and engineers who tested our prototypes again and again, in the field and in the factory to make refinements to produce the final production eyepiece.

These eyepieces with their huge apparent field of view not only gave the observer a panoramic visual experience, but they relax the eye so the observer could pay attention to subtle details for extended periods. These ultra-wide angle eyepieces played a critical role in the military for aiming at targets, and their long eye-relief counterparts helped reduce eye injury from recoil.

Each 100° Series Nitrogen-Purged Waterproof eyepiece is internally sealed and purged with inert, dry nitrogen gas to prevent internal fogging, to halt the intrusion of fine particulates and fungus, and to maximize the life of the internal coatings.
To make sure, every 100° eyepiece is tested by submerging them down to 1 meter of water for 30 minutes

Protection from the Outdoors - By making the eyepiece body nitrogen-purged and waterproof eyepiece internal elements will remain as pristine as the day they were assembled. The sealed, dry environment is impervious to internal fogging and contaminants such as fungus growing in between the lens elements. Our waterproof eyepiece is easier to clean, and there is no risk of cleaning solution migrating from the top of the lens and seeping around edges to be trapped in between elements. To insure a perfect seal we test every eyepiece in one meter of water for 30 minutes.

Comments about Explore Scientific 100 Degree Series Nitrogen-Purged Waterproof Eyepieces:

First thing I noticed when I received this product, was the very nice packageing that Explorer Scientific puts around these eye peices. The 2nd thing I noticed was the weight! The eyepeice felt VERY sturdy and well constructed. The best analogy I can make for this if you have ever felt an Apple iPad vs a cheap plastic tablet, it has a much more solid feel to it. My first light with the eyepeice was Saturn, and wow, ploped it in a 1550MM 10" Newtonian telescope and wow. I felt like I was sticking my eye in a fish bowl and looking around. HUGE field of view! Not to mention Saturn looking the sharpest and largest I have ever seen it! Other observations followed with a close up of the Ring Nebula, Blinking PN, and Hercules cluster, each of which was a breath taking improvement over my 9mm Plossl that came with the scope.

Great EP with incredible views. It's a little heavy, but if you've done your research, you already know that. Also, on another note, the new box packaging is awesome.

There are many write ups about the quality of this lens and they are all on the mark. This lens is unsurpassed quality for the price. Combining a 2 inch format, 14mm focal length, and 100 degree field of view is a great combination for all of you who can use 2 inch eyepieces. I would definitely recommend it if you can afford the price.

I have all three 100*FOV eyepieces and I am satisfied with their price and quality.I live in a region with high humidity,so being waterproof adds to their value.I use these in my Celestron CR6 and find their quality stands up against similar eyepieces in the market.I will be receiving $10.00 off my next purchase for this review , which I will use when the ES 100*FOV 5.5 ML comes out.

Great 100 degree eyepiece, replaces alot of others around it. Shining flashlight on bottom field lens at angle reveals some concrete type glue around the edges, seems ok in use however.

Comments about Explore Scientific 100 Degree Series Nitrogen-Purged Waterproof Eyepieces:

Quality is terrific. The view in my Newtonian has quite a bit of coma, not the fault of the eyepiece, but it does make it difficult to judge edge performance. As far as I can tell optics are perfect with no false color. I didn't slew the scope while viewing so I didn't notice any distortion. in a perfect world it would have more eye relief, but that is the domain of ethos.

I would reccomend to ANYONE thats into astronomy to invest in ES eye pieces. I own the 2" 14mm and love it. Maybe Im just not high speed enough but I cant see much if any difference in quality between the ES and Ethos 100 degree pieces. Dont get me wrong I love my 2 Ethos EPs as well but at a $400+ difference in cost I feel kinda dumb spending $1400 on 2 Ethos when it could have gotten me all 3 Explore Scientific 100 degrees plus food for the month.

And yes, Im joking when I say its a good weapon lol.....

Comments about Explore Scientific 100 Degree Series Nitrogen-Purged Waterproof Eyepieces:

The 14mm and 9mm make nice eyepiece additions to the 28mm that came with my Orion XT10g 10" Dobsonian mounted telescope, providing 2x and 3x, respectively, additional magnification and super sharp viewing. I live in the east Phoenix valley and there is a lot of transient light, so the Dobsonian places the main element (the mirror) at the bottom of a long dark tube, which helps keep the light out. Views of the Orion Nebulas, Jupitor, Venus (recently!), and now Saturn are awesome. While some have noted "cons" about the weight, the weight is noted in the specifications, so it is essential to understand the specs -- it is for this reason that I did not list the weight as a "con" because I knew what I was getting into. The construction is solid and the optics are supurb for the value. The telescope weighs just over 100lbs, and I knew that, too. So it comes with the teritory! (By the way, there is a comment that if I was otherwise compensated for writing this review, it had to be disclosed. Hayneedle sent an email offering $10 off my next purchase and a chance to win $1,000 to write a review, so I am satisfying this notated requirement. However, I'm not really interested in a $10 coupon, ...and when was the last time anyone really won a $1,000 bucks? -- I'm not going to worry about the small token and am planning to use my time more wisely, that is behind the glass of two new eyepieces at night!)
