The new Baader Hyperion 8-24mm Clickstop Zoom continues the Hyperion tradition of delivering top-of-class performance and quality, at very reasonable prices. Zoom eyepieces have earned a lackluster reputation over the years, due to their compromises in optical design and execution. We think the Hyperion zoom will surprise many jaded zoom users with its combination of performance, quality, and novel features.
Some highlights of the Hyperion Clickstop Zoom
Consisting of 7 elements, the Hyperion optical design delivers outstanding sharpness and color correction over its field, even with fast telescopes. Users are reporting that the Clickstop Zoom matches the performance of their best fixed focal length eyepieces!
Continuously variable focal length, with click-stops at 8, 12, 16, 20, 24mm. Remains approximately parfocal across zoom range. Click-stops enable precise focal length matching for bino-viewer use (please note: barrel diameter of the zoom is 57mm, so it may not work in binoviewers for users with narrow interocular separations).
Wide field. The field of view is 68degrees at the 8mm setting, and 50 degrees at 24mm.
Excellent viewing comfort. The eye relief of 12-15mm, large eyelens, and freedom from kidney beaning and blackouts result in a high level of comfort and ease-of-viewing, at all focal lengths.
As with the fixed focal length Hyperions Baader Planetarium has gone to great lengths to give the Hyperion Zoom the most advanced multicoatings ever used on amateur telescope eyepieces. The Hyperion Phantom Group™ multi-coatings truly rival the best in the world - including the famous Zeiss Abbe Orthoscopic! The difference in contrast and transmission is clearly visible at the eyepiece.
Now Includes both 1.25" and 2" Barrels! The 2" barrel attaches through an included adapter ring that has standard 2"x24tpi SCT threads. The 2" barrel also incorporates a reverse taper groove for better seating and retention.
Superb fit and finish. Zoom motion is smooth and precise. Barrels are accurately machined, with excellent surface quality, and hard anodizing. The 1¼" Barrel is threaded for standard 1¼" filters, and the 2" Barrel for standard 2" Filter.
Adjustable rubber eyecup works for both normal and eyeglass users. Rotating eyecup incorporates a variable-height helical adjustment for setting the optimal spacing.

I purchased this EP primarily for GOTO alignment, so as not to have to switch out EP's when zooming in for precise centering during alignment. The optics are good enough that I've ended up using it as my primary middle range observation EP.
There was a complaint in a prior review about poor optics on the 24mm setting, however I have not observed this issue with mine. Optics are clear on all zoom settings, with little to no distortion at the edges. Manufacture quality is very good, with everything feeling very tight and precise.
My only complaint with this EP, which isn't really a complaint since I knew going in this was a byproduct of Zoom lenses, is the limited FOV. The view is definitely constricted compared to non zoom EP's, but this EP in conjunction with a single quality high magnification EP and a single quality wide angle EP will serve nearly all of your observation duties readily. (I use a Williams Optics 6mm SPL and Celestron 32mm Plossl wide angle with this EP and the 3 of them cover nearly all ranges very well for me).

Offers "one size fits all" versatility, but with
some optical comprimizes. Contrast and on-center sharpness are good at all settings. But in my f4.7 scope, off-center sharpness degrades quickly in the 24mm & 20mm settings. At 16mm, it is just Fair. Only at the 12mm & 8mm would I rate it as Good. If you have a fast scope and do alot of low power viewing, you may be disappointed. I also did a quick test with a long focal ratio (f11) scope; Performance was much better.

Comments about Baader Planetarium Hyperion 8mm-24mm Clickstop Zoom Telescope Eyepiece:
This piece is quality in every regard. It arrived today ahead of schedule ( good job guys). You cannot put into words how this thing performs.... Just awesome. I had heard some negative comments about zooms, but being relatively new to the hobby, I went on my gut and looked for quality. I was not disappointed. It is not cheap, but as they say you generally get what you pay for. In this case , I got much more.

Comments about Baader Planetarium Hyperion 8mm-24mm Clickstop Zoom Telescope Eyepiece:
High quality optics and easy to use. Well packaged for shipping and storage. I did have to use pliers (with a cloth wrapped around nose piece) to remove 1 1/4" nose piece and install 2". Searched online to find out others had same issue. I am hoping to use this for eye piece projection. Nice assortment of adapters, overall I am very pleased.

I ordered the eyepiece in March 2012, but did not receive it until May 2012. When I did finally receive the eyepiece. it was exactly as advertised. I am pleased with the product, however the delay in shipment was a disappointment.
