I had just recently got into the hobby of staring at the skies and looking at the stars. I had previously gotten myself a telescope that I found at a local garage sale about a year ago. The scope I had was not that great, so I had been wanting to get myself a scope that would enable me to enjoy my new hobby better. I stumbled upon this website and found the Celestron Nexstar 4 SE and I just had to have it. It is very easy to use and is a great piece of hardware to enjoy my love of the night sky. I had also ordered the eyepiece and filter kit and they have provided a great addition to this fine product. I recommend getting this kit along with the telescope, as well as also buying the power supply, due to the fact that AA batteries do not last long enough. I hope to enjoy this product for a long time and spend some good times looking up into the heavens.

I ordered the 4SE online without having looked at the telescope in person. It is a quality product, the cost is relative to the quality of the telescope. I will first list all of the things I like about it, and then all of the things I do not like. First, the packaging and the software are great. They really take care to send this too you in a sturdy box. The manual that comes on a CD-Rom is helpful, also. The First Light and the NexRemote software is very well made and organized. The software is useful. The telescope body and the tripod are very sturdy. Now the things that I do not like about it. The body of the hand control is very cheap plastic, very thin. The arm that connects the telescope body to the tripod base feel cheap too. The LCD display looks very dated. This is 2010, why make products that use these old LCD displays? It looks cheap. The battery cover is incredibly difficult to get open. I had to use a micro flat head screwdriver to open the case, very annoying. The worst part of this product is that the connector cable that connects the scope to the computer is a freaking serial 9pin db cable. Seriously, what the hell are you doing here? I have not seen a computer that comes with a serial port in probably 3 years. Everything is USB 2.0, I am going to the local electronics store today to buy a usb to serial cable. Overall I really like the telescope itself, like I said, but the cable ports, the LCD display, and the plastic parts really detract from the quality of the overall product.

The telescope works very well and is easy to setup. Had to return as first one wouldn't move in altitudinal direction. Used second scope last night for over three hours. My wife could not have been more pleased.

            Customer Q & A
            1 - 5 of 8
                1   2

Q1: Is your free shipping offer valid for shipping to Canada?

A: Unfortunately, free shipping is available only within the continental U.S.

Q2: I'm planning on getting this scope, could you give me a summary of what it can see object wise?

A: You should be able to see lunar features less than 2 miles across; dark surface features on Mars, detail in Jupiter's cloud belts and the cloud belts on Saturn, faint stars down to about magnitude 13, plus hundreds of star clusters, nebulae and galaxies, with hints of spiral structure in some galaxies. You'll also be able to see all the Messier objects, plus many NGC and IC objects under dark skies.

Q3: I'm interested in viewing (in good detail) the ISS but do not see any information on each scope saying it can be used in this way.

A: The ISS moves too fast to stay in focus using a telescope. The only way to view the ISS with detail would be to use some astronomical hand held binoculars.

Q4: I live in the Philippines, does the Go-to accept long.-lat. for my location like the ones on Meade telescopes or does it only have city inputs?

A: The GoTo system that this telescope runs on is universal and will work with your location.

Q5: Will I be able to see details on planets like Pluto/Neptune using this telescope?

A: No the NexStar 4SE is not capable of viewing Pluto or Neptune. You need a telescope at least 6" in diameter to view Neptune. Pluto is always unviewable because it is so small and dark that even the Hubble cannot clearly view it.
