About Celestron Maksutov-Cassegrain Telescopes

Celestron's Maksutov-Cassegrain telescopes are similar to Schmidt-Cassegrain models in regards to ease, durability, versatility, and minimal maintenance, but trade smaller fields of view for better resolution in planetary observation.

The Maksutov-Cassegrain is similar to the Schmidt-Cassegrain with essentially the same advantages and disadvantages. It uses a thick meniscus correcting lens with a strong curvature and a secondary mirror that is usually an aluminized spot on the corrector. The Maksutov secondary mirror is typically smaller than the Schmidt's which gives it slightly better resolution for planetary observing.

Advantages of Maksutov-Cassegrain Compared to Schmidt-Cassegrain

  • Smaller secondary obstruction results in a slight increase in planetary detail and contrast
  • Less expensive to manufacture
  • Longer focal lengths resulting in higher magnifications for planetary viewing

Disdvantages of Maksutov-Cassegrain Compared to Schmidt-Cassegrain

  • Slightly heavier because of the thick meniscus correcting lens
  • Increased time to reach thermal stability in larger apertures over 90 mm
  • Longer focal lengths resulting in smaller field of view

I live in a 2nd floor condo in the middle of Washington DC and was looking for a grab and go scope for camping trips, for use in the back yard or anytime I didn't want to lug out the 8" dob that I also own. I choose the 4SE based on its weight, portability, excellent reviews and GOTO capability.

Most of my observing is done from my VERY light polluted backyard smack in the middle of Washington DC. I knew that I wasn't going to be looking at faint galaxies and nebulae with this, but there are plenty of brighter objects such as double stars, carbon stars, messier objects and of course planets that would keep me busy enough, but which also would be nearly impossible to locate without GOTO due to light pollution.

The 4SE has been a joy to use! It is light (relative to my dob, it is half the weight) and I can actually bring it outside fully assembled in one trip. Alignment goes very smoothly for me and was accurate enough to put my target in the field of view. Since I take pride in knowing some of the sky, I was able to do alignment based on stars that I identified, so I have not used the other options yet. The optics were clear and I had great views of Jupiter, the Pleiades, the Hyades, and despite horrendous sodium light pollution, the Orion nebula.

If you are looking for a grab and go with GOTO capability, or an excellent city/light polluted area scope I recommend this without reservation. If you are looking for your first telescope, do take seriously advice on weight and bulkiness when weighing the pros and cons of larger aperture scopes. While I am happy with my 8" dob, it is heavy and bulky and is now used only when I head out to darker sites. My 4SE is my primary for use at home and will actually fit in the car for camping trips (which sadly my 8" won't).

I ordered the 4SE online without having looked at the telescope in person. It is a quality product, the cost is relative to the quality of the telescope. I will first list all of the things I like about it, and then all of the things I do not like. First, the packaging and the software are great. They really take care to send this too you in a sturdy box. The manual that comes on a CD-Rom is helpful, also. The First Light and the NexRemote software is very well made and organized. The software is useful. The telescope body and the tripod are very sturdy. Now the things that I do not like about it. The body of the hand control is very cheap plastic, very thin. The arm that connects the telescope body to the tripod base feel cheap too. The LCD display looks very dated. This is 2010, why make products that use these old LCD displays? It looks cheap. The battery cover is incredibly difficult to get open. I had to use a micro flat head screwdriver to open the case, very annoying. The worst part of this product is that the connector cable that connects the scope to the computer is a freaking serial 9pin db cable. Seriously, what the hell are you doing here? I have not seen a computer that comes with a serial port in probably 3 years. Everything is USB 2.0, I am going to the local electronics store today to buy a usb to serial cable. Overall I really like the telescope itself, like I said, but the cable ports, the LCD display, and the plastic parts really detract from the quality of the overall product.

Comments about Celestron NexStar 4 SE Telescope:

As a general telescope, it works great. The alignment of the three stars I choose was not accurate, but when I use the go to feature, the telescope went to my targets (Mars and Jupiter). I could not get much detail of these planets, I think it was the night air. Also when using this telescope the first time around there was no moon (I could still see stars in the background when using this telescope). One other thing I live in the country, away from the city lights, although my neighbor had all his lights on next door.

Comments about Celestron NexStar 4 SE Telescope:

I've had the scope for eight months. It is an excellent product, especially for a novice like me. Overall workmanship and quality are impressive. The tripod seems very stout and I've been pleasantly surprised by the battery life when I've operated it on 8 AAs. I'll just comment on the minor annoyances: 1. The design is such that the controller easily falls off the retainer hooks. 2. The instruction manual is dated June 2006. The hand controller display was evidently redesigned after 2006 so Celestron included a supplemental instruction sheet dated 2012. Seems cheap that Celestron couldn't revise the instruction manual to reflect the current configuration. 3. The dust cover has a very loose fit and wants to fall off when the scope is pointed downward. 4. The retainer clip for the star finder scope is whimpy. The battery falls off the contacts causing the star finder aiming light to disappear. You'll think the battery is dead and needs replacement. 5. This is mostly an operator problem, but in the dark the star finder scope azimuth control knob is easily mistaken for the on/off knob. This results in the need to realign the star finder.

Love this thing! Excellent quality, great price, optics bright and clear. Re comment a zoom eyepiece as an add on. If you ever wanted to get into astronomy, this is you're new best friend! I saw Jupiter tonight. Could see the color bands and some moons. Was amazing to think I'm seeing live a planet. A franking planet! Just love it!

            Customer Q & A

            1 - 5 of 8
                1   2

Q1: Is your free shipping offer valid for shipping to Canada?

A: Unfortunately, free shipping is available only within the continental U.S.

Q2: I'm planning on getting this scope, could you give me a summary of what it can see object wise?

A: You should be able to see lunar features less than 2 miles across; dark surface features on Mars, detail in Jupiter's cloud belts and the cloud belts on Saturn, faint stars down to about magnitude 13, plus hundreds of star clusters, nebulae and galaxies, with hints of spiral structure in some galaxies. You'll also be able to see all the Messier objects, plus many NGC and IC objects under dark skies.

Q3: I'm interested in viewing (in good detail) the ISS but do not see any information on each scope saying it can be used in this way.

A: The ISS moves too fast to stay in focus using a telescope. The only way to view the ISS with detail would be to use some astronomical hand held binoculars.

Q4: I live in the Philippines, does the Go-to accept long.-lat. for my location like the ones on Meade telescopes or does it only have city inputs?

A: The GoTo system that this telescope runs on is universal and will work with your location.

Q5: Will I be able to see details on planets like Pluto/Neptune using this telescope?

A: No the NexStar 4SE is not capable of viewing Pluto or Neptune. You need a telescope at least 6" in diameter to view Neptune. Pluto is always unviewable because it is so small and dark that even the Hubble cannot clearly view it.
