About Celestron Maksutov-Cassegrain Telescopes

Celestron's Maksutov-Cassegrain telescopes are similar to Schmidt-Cassegrain models in regards to ease, durability, versatility, and minimal maintenance, but trade smaller fields of view for better resolution in planetary observation.

The Maksutov-Cassegrain is similar to the Schmidt-Cassegrain with essentially the same advantages and disadvantages. It uses a thick meniscus correcting lens with a strong curvature and a secondary mirror that is usually an aluminized spot on the corrector. The Maksutov secondary mirror is typically smaller than the Schmidt's which gives it slightly better resolution for planetary observing.

Advantages of Maksutov-Cassegrain Compared to Schmidt-Cassegrain

  • Smaller secondary obstruction results in a slight increase in planetary detail and contrast
  • Less expensive to manufacture
  • Longer focal lengths resulting in higher magnifications for planetary viewing

Disdvantages of Maksutov-Cassegrain Compared to Schmidt-Cassegrain

  • Slightly heavier because of the thick meniscus correcting lens
  • Increased time to reach thermal stability in larger apertures over 90 mm
  • Longer focal lengths resulting in smaller field of view

NOTE: review is for the 4SE Combo package (including eyepiece kit, Powertank external battery and AC adapter). As of writing this review, I have used the scope and accessories extensively for about a month in south Florida.
My experience level is intermediate (have been stargazing for most of my childhood, but just recently became interested again).

Celestron 4SE Telescope: A sturdy, compact scope with nice design and easy setup. I chose the smallest of the line primarily because I wanted something portable to take on road trips. I have so far used it in a relatively dark area near the Everglades (though city lights are still visible and the humidity is usually quite high). The optics are great for the moon and planets (was able to spot Uranus for the first time) and you can make out some nebulae and galaxies. I am quite curious to see what the difference will be when I take this to New Mexico next year. One tip: keep the box that the tube comes in. It has molded foam that keeps the scope secure during transport. I also kept the tripod box, but I think the tripod is sturdy enough to be transported without the original box.

Overall, the setup is very fast once you get the hang of it. After setting it up level on the tripod, you just need to input the time, date and your exact latitude and longitude (don't use their city database, just get your coordinates from Google Earth, GPS, your phone, etc). Then align it to three bright stars using a low power eyepiece and you're done. Minor gripe is that it seems you have enter the time and date every time you turn it on. Manually tracking toward naked eye objects with the finder scope is easy after you align it. The database of objects in the drive computer seems to be accurate as well. I haven't connected the scope to my computer yet (you will probably need a serial/USB adapter as Celestron decided to stay in the 1990s and continue with the serial cable standard)

Eyepiece and filter kit: Excellent set of eyepieces, ranging from 4 mm to 32 mm, plus a 2x Barlow lens. Given that the scope uses only a 4" mirror, the 4 mm is a bit overkill but all the other eyepieces can be used quite effectively. In fact, with only the relatively low power 25 mm eyepiece that comes with the scope, you're not getting even close to full utilization. Filters are useful to see more details on the moon. So far, I haven't really been able to make much color differentiation with the planets using the filters, and this is probably a limitation of both aperture and my local atmospheric conditions. Finally, all the items come in a foam padded carrying case with room for a few other items (like cables, bubble level, finder scope)

Powertank battery: Basically, it's a mini car battery with flashlights. It can easily last the whole night and it is nvaluable if you will be using the scope out in the field. Otherwise you'll be using 8 AA batteries which don't last more than a few hours. Very versatile, can be recharged with AC or DC power.

AC adapter: Useful if you'll be doing most of your observations at your home. Could also be used from your car if you have an AC/DC converter for the car (not included).

Overall: Very good scope for beginners, families or anyone needing a small mobile scope that sets up quickly. The extra hundred dollars to get the Powertank and eyepieces is well worth it and it is a great value.

Everything arrived as planned. Hayneedle support was immediate and a delay in shipping was quickly resolved. Package was packed perfectly and very safely.

The telescope itself is a little clunky and the keypad area on the scope itself was a little damaged, but likely not in shipping, rather in manufacturing. The keypad is a cheap plastic while the arm of the scope is very rigid metal. So when the two contact, it is a little rough to get the plastic keypad into a metal socket.

Setup was simple, 30 minutes from start to finish, which included cleaning up.

Alignment is pretty easy as is setting it up. YOU WILL NEED 8 AA BATTERIES or the AC adaptor, both are sold separately. This is just to turn it on and go through the process.

From the first few viewings, I'm not impressed. I didn't expect to be gazing at Jupiter's Red Spot from the first night, but so far, all I can see is the moon and faint specs that are supposed to be planets.

I had my friend who is an astronomy prof at the university align it, he says this is the best you'll get with this. Don't expect to be looking at craters on planets, you will see the planet, but only the size of an eraser on a pencil, at very best, on a very clear night, with the appropriate filter(s).

I'm still happy as I'm more of a beginner. I expect to learn a lot from this and hopefully master it in a year so I can upgrade to a better one once I can use it properly and know what to look for/what to do.

Comments about Celestron NexStar 4SE Telescope Ultimate Bundle:

My son purchased this as a birthday present for his sister (my daughter). She LOVES it! She has used it every evening/night since receiving it. The "bundle" with the various lenses, added to and increased the excitment and joy of locating stars and planets. It is computerized and motorized, it will find and track objects in the sky at a touch of the controls. It is great to use during daylight hours. It brings in distance objects with surprising clarity. With its many features it will allow for many hours of gazing, mapping, and photography.

Was a gift. Had a Meade ToGo scope before. Plastic gears not very good. Could not get the part to fix. This scope is much better quality. First night seen the rings of Saturn, Mars and Jupiter with 3 moons. Very impressed. Waiting to take pictures

Comments about Celestron NexStar 4SE Telescope Ultimate Bundle:

The NexStar 4SE bundle arrived and unpacking and assembly took about 1 hour. I had downloaded the User Manual in advance of purchase to help with my decision to buy the 4SE. The Quick Set-Up Guide that came with the telescope had me viewing Venus (very cool) shortly after I had everything working properly. Bad weather set in after my first observation, but I hope to be able to test all of the functions and features in the coming weeks. Highly recommend the 4SE for a serious amateur. The quality of the bundle is amazing. The documentation is excellent, easy to follow and understand.

          Customer Q & A

Q1: I'm very interested in acquiring such a telescope but before I make my decision I'd like to know if its computerized system works outside USA.  I mean, are there more countries and cities on its database or just cities from USA?

A: The database is worldwide no matter where you are, you just have to input your location, latitude and longitude, and the system will do the rest to configure your location.  Unless you purchase the GPS accessory, then it will acquire that information automatically.

Q2: Can you use this with a computer?

A: Yes, the Celestron NexStar 4SE Telescope can work in conjunction with a computer.
