Astronomy Made Simple

Let a NexStar SE help you find thousands of stars, planets, galaxies, and more at the touch of a button!

In the tradition of Celestron's famous orange optical tubes, the NexStar SE Family combines the classic heritage of the original orange tube telescopes with state-of-the-art features including a fully computerized operating system, flash upgradeable hand control, superior coatings, and much more.

With the NexStar SE, you are in the driver's seat. Simply choose an object from the menu and the telescope will find it for you. Using our patented NexStar technology, the SE scopes have the ability to locate nearly 40,000 objects. All you have to do is look through the eyepiece and enjoy the view!

Don't know what object to choose? Let the intelligent NexStar SE give you a guided tour of the night sky! The "Tour" feature offers a customized list of the best objects in the sky to view for your exact time and location anywhere in the world!

Not only can your NexStar SE find objects, but it can teach you about them as well. Information on the most popular objects can be viewed in the LCD screen of your hand control.

Whether you are a seasoned astronomer looking for a portable scope with advanced features, or just starting your astronomy adventure and looking for an easy way to enjoy the night sky, a NexStar SE will help you take a closer look.

The days of complicated telescope assembly and setup are over. NexStar SE telescopes can be set up in a matter of minutes with no tools required!

About Celestron Schmidt-Cassegrain Telescopes

Celestron’s excellent Schmidt-Cassegrain telescopes are compact and portable and represent the best all-purpose design for a wide variety of uses from terrestrial and deep sky viewing to astrophotography.

Catadioptrics use a combination of mirrors and lenses to "fold" (reflect) the light path and form an image. In a Schmidt-Cassegrain, the light enters through a thin aspheric Schmidt correcting lens. It then strikes the spherical primary mirror. It is reflected back up the tube and intercepted by a small secondary mirror which reflects the light out an opening in the rear of the instrument where the image is formed at the eyepiece.

Catadioptrics are the most popular and most modern type of telescope optical design and are marketed throughout the world in 3.5" and larger apertures. Catadioptric telescopes combine the practical advantages of lenses and mirrors while eliminating their disadvantages. They offer the clarity and contrast of refractors with the low aberration of reflectors. Catadioptrics have an average focal ratio of f/10, which is wide enough for all types of photography. They are also easier to maintain because all optical elements are solidly mounted and rigidly collimated. Catadioptric telescopes provide the best possible combination of light gathering power, long focal length, portability and affordability.

Schmidt-Cassegrain Advantages

  • Very versatile, best all-purpose telescope design
  • Combines the optical advantages of both lenses and mirrors while eliminating their disadvantages
  • Excellent optics and razor sharp images over a wide field
  • Excellent for deep sky observing and astrophotography as well as terrestrial viewing
  • Very good for lunar, planetary and binary star observing
  • Focal ratio generally around f/10, it also has the best near focus capability of any type of telescope
  • Closed tube design reduces image-degrading air currents
  • Extremely compact and portable
  • Easy to use, durable and virtually maintenance free
  • Large apertures at reasonable cost and less expensive than equivalent aperture refractors
  • More accessories available than with other types of telescopes

Schmidt-Cassegrain Disadvantages

  • More expensive than Newtonians of equal aperture
  • Slight light loss due to secondary mirror obstruction compared to refractors The Maksutov-Cassegrain is similar to the Schmidt-Cassegrain with essentially the same advantages and disadvantages. It uses a thick meniscus correcting lens with a strong curvature and a secondary mirror that is usually an aluminized spot on the corrector. The Maksutov secondary

This is my second telescope from celestron and I must say the optics on this one is much better than my previous one. Images are bright and sharp and the overal quality of this model feels much better. The skyalign process can be a little trying sometimes but if you level the tripod and have a map of the night sky it can make things alot easier .Iphone users should note that there is an app. that will give accurate starmaps based on your location using the phones built in gps & compass system, this was a lifesaver for me when doing star alighnments. The other great thing about this telescope is that it is not that heavy and can be carried by one person with only one trip.A big plus if you live in a suburban area and have to take your scope to darker skyies for better views.Overall this is a great begginers scope.

I recent purchased this scope and have to say I was completely disappointed. Out of the box it was missing a cover for the battery compartment. Then when I tried to use it I found out that it had about a 90 degree dead region in the azithmutal drive. Even worse was the remote thought the scope was in fact moving through this zone. so the alignment would be lost if the drive got into this region.

Then there is the software for computer controlling the telescope. This is a joke. All it does is show an image of the hand controller on the computer monitor. Now you get click the controller buttons with your mouse instead of directly on the hand controller. Duh...why would anyone want to do that? I was expecting a star map that I could click on and the scope would then go to that star. But it does not do that. And to make the software even dummer, they use an old style RS232 serial cable and,get this, it has to plug into the hand controller. Unless your computer is 5 to 10 years old it probably doesn't even have this kind of port. You can go out and spend $25-$30 for an adapter. But that would be a waste considering the software. My impression is that Celestron just wanted to say the scope copuld be computer controlled.

With all of these problems you would think that Celestron would help. I tried calling their number but got a message to leave an email address. Customer service has been obviously outsourced oversees so you will not get to actually talk to anyone.

The manual is also poorly written with essentially no information on how to fix anything. The lack of information in it was amazing.

On the positive side I will say that the optics seemed crisp and sharp. But then I thought I was buying a complete telescope.

After wasting a two weeks on it, I returned it. I would not but this scope or any other in the Celestron Nexstar series. Poor quality control and no support.

Comments about Celestron NexStar 5 SE Telescope:

Received this today (5 days ahead of the date promised during checkout). Like a kid at Christmas I immediately opened it and set it up in my living room. 1st time took 10 minutes. It functions as advertised with the power-supply I also bought from this site. Simple to assemble, easy to figure out the hand control, adequate instruction manual (answered my questions -- I don't read directions until stumped), and smother motor operations. The electric motor base and the manual latitude wedge on the tripod make it versatile.

The controller hooks to a computer via a serial port. A USB connector is available for an extra cost. The tripod requires a bit of disassembly before it can be collapsed.

I ordered this after a purchase made for another telescope (from the manufacturer's website) wouldn't ship for 5 to 8 weeks. I then ordered the Nexstar 5SE and a Power Tank. The telescope arrived in 2 days and the Power Tank 4 (due to FedEx error). The website is well designed and very informative. Shipping was fast and cheap. Hayneedle/Telescopes really seems interested in making their customers happy. I am already looking forward to future purchases for accessories and upgrades. Thanks!!!!!

                Customer Q & A

Q1: How large, i.e. what are the dimensions of the Celestron NexStar 5 SE - I am new to telescopes and am thinking of portability. The product attribute information gives the weight (27 lbs) but not its size.

A: The Celestron NexStar 5 SE's optical tube is 11 inches long. Stowed length is about 20 inches because of the fork arm. The tripod folds to about 36 inches.

Q2: What is the shipping weight and dimensions of the 5 SE?

A: The shipping weight of the Celestron 5SE at shipment is 40lbs. The box dimensions are 33"L x 27"W x 13"H.
