About Celestron Schmidt-Cassegrain Telescopes

Celestron’s excellent Schmidt-Cassegrain telescopes are compact and portable and represent the best all-purpose design for a wide variety of uses from terrestrial and deep sky viewing to astrophotography.

Catadioptrics use a combination of mirrors and lenses to "fold" (reflect) the light path and form an image. In a Schmidt-Cassegrain, the light enters through a thin aspheric Schmidt correcting lens. It then strikes the spherical primary mirror. It is reflected back up the tube and intercepted by a small secondary mirror which reflects the light out an opening in the rear of the instrument where the image is formed at the eyepiece.

Catadioptrics are the most popular and most modern type of telescope optical design and are marketed throughout the world in 3.5" and larger apertures. Catadioptric telescopes combine the practical advantages of lenses and mirrors while eliminating their disadvantages. They offer the clarity and contrast of refractors with the low aberration of reflectors. Catadioptrics have an average focal ratio of f/10, which is wide enough for all types of photography. They are also easier to maintain because all optical elements are solidly mounted and rigidly collimated. Catadioptric telescopes provide the best possible combination of light gathering power, long focal length, portability and affordability.

Schmidt-Cassegrain Advantages

  • Very versatile, best all-purpose telescope design
  • Combines the optical advantages of both lenses and mirrors while eliminating their disadvantages
  • Excellent optics and razor sharp images over a wide field
  • Excellent for deep sky observing and astrophotography as well as terrestrial viewing
  • Very good for lunar, planetary and binary star observing
  • Focal ratio generally around f/10, it also has the best near focus capability of any type of telescope
  • Closed tube design reduces image-degrading air currents
  • Extremely compact and portable
  • Easy to use, durable and virtually maintenance free
  • Large apertures at reasonable cost and less expensive than equivalent aperture refractors
  • More accessories available than with other types of telescopes

Schmidt-Cassegrain Disadvantages

  • More expensive than Newtonians of equal aperture
  • Slight light loss due to secondary mirror obstruction compared to refractors The Maksutov-Cassegrain is similar to the Schmidt-Cassegrain with essentially the same advantages and disadvantages. It uses a thick meniscus correcting lens with a strong curvature and a secondary mirror that is usually an aluminized spot on the corrector. The Maksutov secondary

An excellent piece of work. I have been wanting to buy this product for a while but for some reason or the other( mostly due to financial constraints) it lead to my purchasing other scopes. I was not getting the feel for those products. I returned them and finally got this one and the moment I opened the box and saw the sturdy tripod I knew I made the right choice. I assembled the scope and the orange tube was a beauty. I aligned the finderscope and the target appeared right in the center. Tried Jupiter with all the eyepieces. The views were great except for the 4 mm eyepiece which was understandably producing magnification that was beyond the highest useful magnification. A extraordinary scope. I am not at all surprised why the SE series is such a success.

this was my first telescope and i bought it because it had the skyalign and i figured i could use it to learn more and find things in the sky well ive taken it out 3 times now and not once have i got it to align correctly i did some reading on this and it said to use the two star align i have not yet done this since it has gotten cold. This is my second telescope i have recived since my first one had a battery problem and had to send it back. This telescope has amazing optics very clear and also has a very stable tripod but i think once ive played with this more i will get it down and it will make everything better

Comments about Celestron NexStar 6 SE Telescope:

I've now had this item about 2 years with lots of use so I feel I'm well versed in it's capabilities. This scope can be AMAZING. Remember that you need quality optics AND GOOD/GREAT VIEWING CONDITIONS w/ANY SCOPE. Views of Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Venus & the moon are exceptional. DSOs like Orion, Ring, Dumbell nebulas & a host of others can be jaw dropping. I use it in light polluted areas as well as Star Party dark sites and I've had great results. Suggest you get the bundle + A/C adapter, upgrade the diagonal & some above average EPs - $100 range or a premium zoom & sky chart. Note in early spring or late fall when humidity is low, a blustery day (to blow away the pollution) followed that night with a clear sky & calm conditions = eye popping views. ENJOY!!!

Comments about Celestron NexStar 6 SE Telescope:

I was able to see two atmospheric bands of Jupiter with some difficulty (I used several lenses and verified the collimation) and the Orion Nebula was very faint smudge. I expected more from the telescope of the year.

Comments about Celestron NexStar 6 SE Telescope:

First telescope. Have not had the opportunity to use it much. Did manage to align with three star method fairly quickly . The packaging was great and received the the telescope quickly . The Construction of the scope is very good. However, The wired key pad Is sort of hard to read, especially when your in the dark. We'll I need more time with telescope to discover its capabilities and limits.

Package got here very quickly, even over a holiday week. Nothing was damaged and everything was in great condition on arrival. Props to Celestron for their packaging. Had to leave town after getting it but tried it out quickly and got great views of the lunar surface and Jupiter and its moons. I could even see the bands of Jupiter, just with the eyepiece that comes with the telescope! I am going to be buying the accessory pack as well as I've read many users say it is a must.

Comments about Celestron NexStar 6 SE Telescope:

I had to write a review just to alert buyers, especially around the holidays, that this product arrives in a box with "Celestron" written in huge letters and the telescope model/name written beneath it. This COMPLETELY ruined the Christmas surprise for the person for whom I bought it. I emailed and called Hayneedle customer service, but they didn't offer any resolution.

So, please make sure you make appropriate delivery arrangements if this is a gift and there's a chance the person for whom you're buying it could see the package when it arrives!

        Customer Q & A

Q1: Is the "Starbright XLT" an option or integrated?

A: StarBright XLT coatings are standard in the NexStar SE telescope series.

Q2: Does this scope swivel 360 degrees on the mount? Or 180 and flip the OTA for viewing on the other side?

A: The Celestron NexStar 6 SE's mount rotates 360 degrees.

Q3: How is the aperture rating?

A: The aperture of the Celestron NexStar 6 SE telescope is found by measuring the diameter of the scope's primary mirrors: 6 inches.

Q4: I have a Canon EOS 30D and I am wanting to get into astrophotography. Is this a good scope for me, if not, could you tell me which scope would be best for me?

A: Yes, the NexStar 6 SE telescope will do a nice job for you. There are more expensive scopes that will perhaps do better, but the NexStar 6 SE is a good scope with which to begin a career in astrophotography.

Q5: What is the shipping weight and dimensions of the 6 SE?

A: The shipping weight of the Celestron 6SE at shipment is 46lbs. The box dimensions are 33"L x 27"W x 13"H.
