Description

The Galileo G-102MD2 catadioptric telescope is Galileo's most popular telescope, and for good reason. No where can you find a telescope that is so easy to use, has so many features, so many accessories, and with so much quality for the price. Take your Galileo G-102MD2 outside at night, point it north, set the deluxe latitude adjuster to your latitude (yes, we give you a list of the latitudes of all major cities), turn on the fully motorized mount, and point the telescope at any object in the sky. Congratulations, your Galileo G-102MD2 is now tracking that object through the sky, and will continue to do so all night long!

The Galileo G-102MD2 is mounted on Galileo's fully motorized German Equatorial Mount. The mount is electronically driven in both axis; right ascension and declination. At rest the mount will automatically track to the west at 1x sidereal speed. The included hand box controller controls the scope in all 4 directions and features 4 speeds: 2x sidereal, 8x sidereal, 64x sidereal, and Slew (Slewing moves the scope 3° per second). The electronic mount can be run on battery power (8 AA batteries) or with the included AC adapter. It also features a deluxe latitude adjuster for proper polar alignment. The Mount is attached to a very sturdy, fully adjustable, pre-assembled metal tripod with retractable rubber feet. The tripod also features an accessory tray with slots to place 4 1¼″ eyepieces or lenses. Additionally, the Galileo Color Filter Wheel is included enabling the user to quickly switch between 2 color filters (Planetary & Nebula) by simply rotating the dial on the CFW. The filters are universal 1¼″ so users can remove and replace filters of their choice. The CFW can hold up to 3 different filters at one time. The optical tube assembly attaches to the mount by an adjustable tube clamp which in combination with the adjustable counter balance weights ensures easy fluid movement of the telescope at all times. The telescope features heavy-duty primary and secondary mirror cells, and a catadioptric correcting lens for a greater focal length in a shorter optical tube assembly. The telescope tube assembly is finished out with a large 2″ format focus tube. 2″ to 1¼″ adapter is included as well.

The Galileo G-102MD2 optical tube assembly features a catadioptric design providing an 1100mm focal length (catadioptric correcting lens is fully multi-coated). The Primary mirror is 102mm's in diameter and features a heavy duty mirror cell with push / pull collimation screws. The primary mirror is fully aluminized with 92% reflectivity and has a Silicon Monoxide Quartz overcoat which protects the coating. The 102mm diameter mirror provides a resolving power of 1.14 arc seconds. The secondary mirror has an obstruction of approximately 25% linear (approximately 6% of the total area). The optical tube assembly is diffraction limited at λ4 (¼ wave in Sodium light). Included with the Galileo G-102MD2 are an 1¼″ 6.8mm to 16mm zoom eyepiece (42° apparent field of view @ 6.8mm), an 1¼″ 20mm eyepiece (52° apparent field of view) and a 3 element Astroscopic 3x Barlow.

Comments about Galileo 1100x102 Catadioptric Telescope:

This was my first scope a few months back. I now have a 12 inch Orion Dob with Zhumell 1.25 and 2 inch lens and filter kits, along with the supplied
Orion and Galileo lenses, plus a couple of lenses purchased from Galileo.

I gues I will start off saying that all the lenses
that I have offer their own personalities under given circumstances. The cheapie plastic ones provided by Galileo with the scope work just as well, if not better in some circumstances over my other optics. I have about ten to choose from on a given setting. I find myself swapping out lenses with the Galileo plastic ones in somewhat disbelief in their optical quality over my metal machined others. Someone in the optics department is doing a good job over there.
The aftermarket ordered Galileo optics I have are somewhat on par with my other glass wonders, being made out of machined metal instead of plastic. So much for the lens department.

Tracking-stability. I really like the motor-tracking feature of this Galileo on the higher powers. Jupitor moves in the sky, and with this motorized gizmo I can keep it in the eyepiece better than I can with my 12 in Orion Dob on high power. The Galileo seems to vibrate less after movement also. It's a smaller scope, so that is just the way it is.
Columation---The Galileo manual doesn't seem to have a clue that it may nee adjustment! I checked myine with the laser columator provided with the Orion,--It was well within adjustment.
I replaced the plastic 2in to 1.25 reducer with a metal Zhumell. It also has a brass ring inside so you do not score the lens casings with the adjusting bolt.
The plastic 3x barlow lens works, but not as good as my Zhumel 2x barlow. I also purchased an erecting lens from Galileo, but after using it a few times I chose to get a Zhumel 45 degree one that didn't stick out as much. The Zhumel is better, but at twice the price.
Mars eye--It works! Have no problem with it. Well!--Yes i do. I leave the on switch on, and have to replace the batteries all the time.
The tripod is sturdy, the focus mechanism has some backlash that is noticeable at the higher powers. For what it is, it's a well built unit.
Having my 12 in dobsonian, I have retired my Galileo to daytime usage and shipwatching on the coast. I also plan on purchasing the 2in 18mm
Galileo lens for my Orion Dob. This is a size I do not have in 2 inch format. It will cost me less over the others, but what I have experienced with their plastic lenses, why argue with success.

I hope this has been somewhat informative.
