Our SmartStar™-G-MC90 telescope system is the ideal choice for deep space viewing and astrophotography. This 90mm-diameter Maksutov-Cassegrain Telescope dramatically reduces the chromatic aberration that plagues its Refractor counterparts and has a focal length of 1200mm. This light weight, ultra-compact scope offers a great combination of power and transportability, and brings stargazing to a whole other level.
Alt-Azimuth Mount– The Cube™
The SmartStar™-G-MC90 comes with our patented Alt-Azimuth telescope mount, a.k.a. The Cube™. This compact mount design is probably the most functional and flexible unit on the market. Both axis motors are built into a small single unit which is universally compatible with all telescopes using a dove-tail connection. In addition, there are no “dead spots” – so you can point your telescope to ANYWHERE above the horizon, whereas, other mounts block the telescope tube at certain points of rotation. This mount also comes standard with AC connection. An optional DC adaptor is available so you can plug your telescope motor into your car if you’re camping or at any remote location
The most easy to understand controller on the market
The GoToNovaTM Controller is much easier to use than other similar products. The hand controller is more intuitive with menu categories better organized. It also has the largest LCD screen on the market with 8 lines of content compared with others that only have 2 lines. Using the easy-to-use hand controller, you can easily set up your telescope and select where you want to go.
More precise speed control for viewing objects
The control system also allows you to slew the telescope at 9 different drive speeds, keeping the object within the telescope’s viewfinder for as long as you wish.
USB Port
The 8402 hand controller comes with a USB port that tremendously expands the functionalities of the already powerful system. With the USB2COM driver installed, the USB port works as an RS232 serial port. It supports firmware upgrades and computer control. With ASCOM protocol, you can control your telescope with most ASCOM compatible software. This enables you to utilize the CPU, large screen, and disk space of your PC/laptop. With a wide selection of software, your star gazing experience will never be the same again.
Simply a better tripod
Made of 1-inch heavy-duty stainless steel the SmartStar™ Tripod is sturdy yet elegant, and gives the user unparalleled stability during operation. Solid construction joints keep your mount locked securely. With an all-metal support system your valuable telescope will keep still even on a windy night.
GoToNovaTM Computerized Control System
The revolutionary GoToNovaTM computerized control system is by far the most technologically advanced automated tracking system available on the market today. With a database of 50,000 celestial objects, including all of the most famous galaxies, nebulae, star clusters, not to mention the planets, you’ll be able to enjoy star gazing with the simple push of a button.
32-Channel GPS Module
All G-series telescopes come standard with a 32-channel GPS module for fully automated operation. Simply turn on the GoToNovaTM Controller and the GPS module will automatically synchronize your telescope location and time with the GoToNovaTM computerized control system. View celestial objects without having to manually punch in the date, time, latitude or longitude.

An average telescope at best. For a very casual user, I found the instructions accompanying the telescope to be virtually worthless. Focusing is a difficult procedure, and the tripod is barely adequate for the task. The GPS version of the finder/drive is hard to use, but I am hopeful that I will eventually be able to find a particular star without having the telescope seeking my feet. It is somewhat amusing to watch the telescope move by itself, stalking an elusive star, but doesn't seem to have any better sense of direction than my 96 year old mother. I don't have a clue how to determine if the software needs to be updated, the update software wouldn't install on my PC, so I'm not sure that there is any advantage to the machine having a USB port at all. The tripod is not tall enough for me, so almost any viewing angle is an uncomfortable exercise. I had a refracting telescope many years ago, and this one is better in many ways than the first. If you expect an easy setup and pleasant viewing experience, then I'd advise you to look elsewhere. The GPS star finder gives the illusion of simplicity that it doesn't deliver on. The telescope provided a crisp view of the moon's terminator, but just breathing on the telescope made for some shaky viewing. Haven't figured out how to lock the tube in it's mounting repeatably so that it doesn't drop out of viewing position unexpectedly. Good luck to you, if you buy one!

Comments about iOptron SmartStar G MC90 GoTo GPS Maksutov Cassegrain Telescope:
I bought this for my adult son. It is the first time I've ever used a telescope to look at the sky. We agree that it is a pretty good scope for the price. We like the GPS tracking although we haven't been able to get it to properly "lock in" without manual adjustments. I would like to get an electronic focus but one is not available from iOptron (yet). High magnifications are hard to focus because jitteriness you get just from touching the focus knob.

Comments about iOptron SmartStar G MC90 GoTo GPS Maksutov Cassegrain Telescope:
The manual that comes with the unit is confusing as it is not specifically for the model I bought. The online manual that you can download is extremely good. Save some time and download the manual.

Comments about iOptron SmartStar G MC90 GoTo GPS Maksutov Cassegrain Telescope:
Well when I got it, I was surprised at how solid it was and what it came with. I am new to astronomy and for me, it had everything I needed to get started. I haven't really had the chance to use it much due to it being summer in Central Florida and it being cloudy/hazy all the time.
I have used it to look at the moon when it actually is visible though, and it was easy to find. But, the hardest part is most definitely trying to center it on a target. Like I said, I'm new so it is sort of a learning curve for me.
My number one biggest complaint over all are the lenses. They work great, that's not the problem. The problem is that to actually look through the scope, I have to hold my eye open like I'm putting in a contact lense because my eyelashes get in the way. I can't stand that. Now, I did say focusing was hard, but I will admit that, the haze could have been throwing off my view a bit, so I'm not quite sure.
Lastly, one thing that I still am not really sure about is how the GPS works. When it says it's getting a signal, it's to my knowledge that I should just be able to turn it on and it points right to any object in the sky, but I also have to align it to a sky object which throws me off a bit.
All in all I would recommend this scope, it is very solid and comes with a lot. Again, my only and major complaint are the lenses and focusing.
