Description

8-inch aperture and Go-To!

Meade's LXD75 SN-8 AT telescope with Autostar is a precision instrument that'll give outstanding service over a lifetime. It's an excellent scope for the intermediate or advanced observer.
Expect all the conveniences. And expect ultra-sharp, ultra-bright images of planets and deep-sky objects like nebulae, star clusters, and galaxies, too. At this telescope's heart are premium-grade Meade optics.

Optical Excellence

Diffraction-limited optics - 8-inch, Schmidt-Newtonian optics, to be precise - are mounted in precision-machined aluminum cells, which are in turn enclosed in sturdy, steel tubes and coated with high-grade, baked-on, textured enamel. The optical tube assembly is closed, reducing air currents inside, preventing image distortion, and helping to keep optics clean. The corrector lens corrects fully for spherical aberration and provides pinpoint star images. Water-white glass increases light transmission more than 10 percent. Premium-grade Pyrex mirrors provide exceptional thermal stability and eliminate image shimmer. The extremely fast, well corrected f/ratios provide short photographic exposure times and wide fields of view.

Other High-Performance Features

A German equatorial mount with heavy-duty shaft and castings, as well as precision worm gears on both axes, ensures precision tracking and slewing - essential for astrophotography. For ultra-precise pointing, the HPP function puts objects in the center of the field of view, allowing quick, easy location of deep-sky objects at the farthest limits of the telescope's capability. Periodic error correction eliminates errors on the RA axis over the course of one or more training periods, minimizing guiding corrections during long-exposure photography. Nine-speed drive controls provide a rapid slew rate of 4.5 degrees per second to 1x sidereal; tracking and slewing are controlled from the AutoStar controller. Three-star alignment ensures precise alignment and eliminates the need for a complicated optical/mechanical alignment process. The variable-height field tripod with a spreader bar brace provides the excellent stability and vibration-damping required for both visual observation and astrophotography. An illuminated polar alignment viewfinder offers quick, precise polar alignment.  Powered by eight D-size batteries or by optional car cigarette lighter and AC wall adapters.

Ultra-High Transmission Coatings

The Meade UHTC group permits the highest levels of light transmission (a 20 percent increase in total telescope light transmission over that of standard-equipment coatings) ever offered on amateur telescopes.

AutoStar Controller

The AutoStar controller helps you quickly find and GoTo more than 30,000 objects in the night sky. View planets, stars, galaxies, nebulae, and comets - all at the push of a button. AutoStar is pre-programmed with several guided tours, including the popular Tonight's Best. To take it, just input date, time, and location. Then let AutoStar take you on a guided tour of the best objects that particular night. The AutoStar controller can be updated, too. Log on to Meade.com to download software upgrades, guided tours, and timely objects like comets - free. Keep your AutoStar up to date and your telescope will grow with you for years to come.

Comments about Meade LXD75 SN-8AT Schmidt-Newtonian Telescope with AutoStar:

We purchased the 8inch based on the excellent views we obtained with the 6 inch model. 2 inches does not sound like a big leap- however, an increase of 33% brings out subtle nuances in planetary viewing and the DSO seem to leap out when used with a binoviewer.
We are very impressed with this mass production scope and it compares well with our Celestron 203 SCT and our 80mm VixenSS. I would only reccomend that buyers purchase the 10inch model as size matters.

Comments about Meade LXD75 SN-8AT Schmidt-Newtonian Telescope with AutoStar:

Contrary to another review here,I am getting excellent images in the 195x range with this scope on globular clusters and nebulae! But collimation is critical on such a fast (f4) scope!...Without precise collimation the images will suffer greatly especially fine planetary detail!...The large central obstruction does take away from fine planetary detail as it would in any scope with central obstruction but the larger the obstruction the greater this negative effect. On the other hand, this large secondary mirror is a positive in the realm of astrophotography!...Bigger mirror, less vignetting...Faster focal ratio, less exposure time!So this is all good if you want to take pictures. But for visual use I would suggest something with a longer(slower)focal ratio whereas collimation is not as critical.Longer focal ratio is just so much more forgiving than shorter focal ratio with less aberration and edge of field softness that will enable the use of many more eyepieces in the less expensive realm without showing these problems. For great planetary, get a refractor like the AR5! my other scope! My SN8 on the other hand is great for the faint deep sky stuff due to the 8 inch light grab and the short tube makes it portable and still manageable for the LXD75 mount where tracking and GO TO are a wonderful thing!

      Great for wide-field deep-space viewing

      By John G

      from Undisclosed

Comments about Meade LXD75 SN-8AT Schmidt-Newtonian Telescope with AutoStar:

Great for wide-field and deep-space viewing, such as the larger clusters, galaxies, and nebulae. The 26mm supplied eyepiece shows deep space objects at maximum brightness (6.5mm exit pupil, 31x). Double-magnify that (with a 13mm+/- eyepiece or a barlow) and they still show well. Great at 30x to 100x, but not any higher. Stars are fuzzy at 125x. Mars was impossible to see clearly back when it was close in Fall 2005. No scope is perfect all-around; this one makes its trade-offs in favor of wide-field and deep-space viewing and photography. If you want to view planets seriously, get something with a much-longer focal ratio and smaller secondary mirror. Fortunately the mount is compatible with dovetails on other LXD75 OTAs and some scopes made by Vixen and Celestron, so you can collect different OTAs for this mount. You can even buy compatible dovetail plates by themselves.

I think the LXD75 mount is unique in having such a high payload capacity (30 lbs or more) for its price, goto capability, and acceptance of different OTAs. It's extremely important that you balance the scope, and that you mind the balance if you put binoviewers or other heavy devices on it. It has noticable free-play in its pointing, and no documented method to tighten it up.

I've had this over a year now. When I got it there were a few parts missing. A motor gear stripped during the first month. Meade took care of these problems with no hesitation.

Like other reviewers, my Autostar pointing system has gone crazy a few times, either moving spontaneously or pointing completely wrong. It has some safeguards to prevent the scope from colliding into the tripod, but not enough. Maybe an event like that caused my gear to strip. So I've learned to never turn my back on the thing while it's moving, and be ready to stop it or shut it off quickly during all moves. And some nights I get perfect alignment while other times it takes a wide spiral search to find anything. For able-bodied, patient, and attentive users. If you've been hand-pointing your scope, you will appreciate the goto and the motorized tracking, but don't pitch your finding charts.

The focuser is fine for ordinary eyepieces, but is rickety with heavier devices, and it's tough to tighten the thumbscrews under a wide device. No wonder JMI, Moonlite, and others make upgrade focusers specific to this scope.

A physicists view of the LXD75

      By Colin Perkins

      from Undisclosed

Comments about Meade LXD75 SN-8AT Schmidt-Newtonian Telescope with AutoStar:

Firstly I should say I have a post graduate degree in astrophysics. My kids aged 6 and 8 and myself love the telescope, even my wife likes it. I live in the center of Houston TX with street lights all around, but can still see the ring nebular although haven't seen a galaxy yet. The scope was easy to assemble and its easy to work. However its big and heavy, so getting it out every night is a pain. Also aligning it is very hit and miss, some nights it aligns 1st time, some nights I try 10 times and still can't align it.

      LXD75 SN-8 AT-w/AUTOSTAR - UHTC COATINGS

      By David Ganoe

Comments about Meade LXD75 SN-8AT Schmidt-Newtonian Telescope with AutoStar:

A rather heavy telescope . The electronics are somewhat confusing, but once worked out, it performs rather well. Haven't really been able to use it much, due to the weather here in the northeast. But still hoping for some clear skies. All in all, a fairly nice instrument.
