Description

Named Official Product of International Year of Astronomy, FirstScope pays tribute to the men and women who brought us one step closer to understanding the universe around us!

In 1609, world-renowned Italian scientist, Galileo Galilei, introduced an elementary telescope to the growing astronomy community which sparked interest into the mysterious night sky for centuries to come. Four centuries later, in celebration of the International Year of Astronomy, Celestron offers the portable FirstScope Telescope. The FirstScope pays tribute to Galileo Galilei and many of history’s most notable astronomers and scientists by displaying their names around the optical tube. We honor the contributions of these men and women, who brought us one step closer to understanding the universe around us.

The FirstScope is a wonderful keepsake for anyone interested in astronomy. This quality Dobsonian style telescope features a 76 mm aperture reflector optical tube. FirstScope is an ideal entry level astronomical telescope. It is very easy to observe with, the user simply navigates the night sky by moving the tube in the direction of their desired object, making the viewing experience a snap! The compact design makes it easy enough to take with you on your next outdoor adventure. FirstScope is also stylish enough to be a decorative fixture on your bookshelf or desk.

I purchased this telescope for my twin Grandsons who are five, and keep asking to use my WO Apo and Naglers by themselves. Of course this makes old guys a little tense, but they do a better job keeping objects centered than I do.

This telescope comes ready to go out of the box. It was well packaged and the freight company managed to get it here in one piece.

The secondary and primary mirrors seem to be well made and have great coatings. The R&P focuser, although made of plastic is still fairly smooth and stable. I put on a red dot finder to ease aiming for me, the kids just sight down the barrel. The tube is constructed out of metal with what looks like a powder-coated paint job. The dust cover fits well.

The eyepieces are OK, but the 4mm is just a touch overboard. The views are really more than I expected for an inexpensive telescope, very wide and pleasant. When I put my Nagler 13mm in the focuser and it really came alive. The telescope moves well in altaz with good adjustment options.

Bottom line, this telescope works much better than any department store telescope that sells for a lot more. It offers good stability and easy use for little hands. And to be honest I'm an only child and I don't know if I really want the little tykes to take it home, I don't want to share.

My 3yr old constantly talks about the moon and Mars and is very inquisitive. As a potty training reward I purchased this for him due to the great price and great reviews. Although it was pretty much assembled, there were zero instructions. This is my sons 1st telescope but mine as well. I didn't know where to start and still don't really know how use it.

      Comments about Celestron FirstScope Telescope:

Bought this for kids while we wait for our 12 inch Dob. This little scope is a great purchase for the money and is on par or better than "box store" telescopes costing 2x or more. Telescope provides good lunar views and can even see Jupiter along with the 4 Galilean moons. Don't expect the great red spot or a super wide field of view as telescopes and/or eyepieces that provide this kind of detail cost much more. I ordered the finderscope for this as finding objects without is really hit or miss. I think telescopes.com should just sell this telescope with finder and charge more as beginning astronomers would be better off with the items that come in the accessory kit anyway.

      Comments about Celestron FirstScope Telescope:

Like so many other, I brought the First Scope for my oldest Grandson for Christmas 2 years ago. The price was right for his age and I wanted him to have the experiences I had When my folks Brought me a telescope as a Christmas as a 5th grader. We took it out Christmas evening and he marveled at Saturn, the Orion Nebula, and the Moon. The Mirror is of respectable quality. The lenses that come with it are nice. The mount is stable. The original finder scope could be better but what do you want for the price? I got the accessory Kit for his birthday and the finder scope that came with the kit was worth the price alone. For the price, the scope well worth it. It is not a $600 scope or even a $100 dollar scope but it beats the big box store scopes selling for twice as much. I plan on making a wood case with foam and velvet lining to house the scope in for traveling.

          Customer Q & A

Q1: Is there a way you can put this on a tripod?

A: No. This telescope can not be mounted on a tripod.

Q2: Will the FirstScope accept 1 1/4" eyepieces?

A: The Celestron FirstScope will accept any 1.25inch eyepieces.

Q3: What are the best uses of the Firstscope?

A: The FirstScope is an ideal entry level astronomical telescope. It is very easy to observe with, the user simply navigates the night sky by moving the tube in the direction of their desired object, making the viewing experience a snap! The compact design makes it easy enough to take with you on your next outdoor adventure.  You would get great views of the moon, and you would also see some of the larger planets like Jupiter and Saturn but without as much detail as the moon.
