Description

The popularity of our NexStar 114 models inspired us to go bigger! We are proud to introduce NexStar 130 SLT. The NexStar 130 SLT has 30% more light-gathering power than our 114mm telescope.

And the 130 SLT, like the other models in the SLT Series, comes with a fully computerized hand control. The computerized hand control gives you the ability to automatically track to view any of its 4,000+ objects, including over 600 galaxies, 300 clusters, and dozens of beautiful binary stars.

With its pre-assembled, adjustable steel tripod, the NexStar 130 SLT can be up and ready to use in a matter of minutes. Our new SkyAlign alignment technology and the included StarPointer Finderscope with a red LED makes aligning a breeze.

Begin to explore some of the fainter Messier objects using the additional light-gathering capabilities of the 130 SLT’s 5" primary mirror.

Because of the Newtonian design, the mirror gives fully color-corrected views that are best suited for astronomical use.

Portable, User-friendly Design

The internal battery compartment provides power to the high precision servo motors for rigid low-vibration performance while eliminating cord wrap issues associated with external battery packs. With the NexStar's ergonomically-designed hand control, the user is free to remove the hand control from its holder for remote use, or leave it cradled for hands-free operation. With a touch of a button you can select the object catalog, change the slew speed, view fascinating information about an object, or simply know if a desired object is visible in the sky.

About Celestron Reflector Telescopes

A Newtonian reflector uses a single concave mirror as its primary. Light enters the tube traveling to the mirror at the back end. Light is then "bent" forward in the tube to a single point, its focal plane. A flat mirror called a "diagonal" intercepts the light and points it out the side of the tube at right angles to the tube through the eyepiece. The eyepiece is placed there for easy viewing. Newtonian Reflector telescopes replace heavy lenses with mirrors to collect and focus the light, providing much more light gathering power for the money.

You can have focal lengths up to 1000 mm and still enjoy a telescope that is relatively compact and portable. Newtonian Reflector telescopes do require more care and maintenance because the primary mirror is exposed to air and dust. However, this small drawback does not hamper this type of telescope's popularity with those who want an economical telescope that can still resolve faint, distant objects. Newtonian reflectors produce a "right-side-up image" but the image will appear rotated based on the location of the eyepiece holder in relation to the ground. Newtonian reflectors are best for astronomical use where right-side-up does not matter.

Newtonian Advantages

  • Lowest cost per inch of aperture compared to Refractors and Catadioptrics since mirrors can be produced at less cost than lenses in medium to large apertures
  • Reasonably compact and portable up to focal lengths of 1000 mm
  • Excellent for faint deep sky objects such as remote galaxies, nebulae and star clusters due to the generally fast focal ratios (f/4 to f/8)
  • Adequate for lunar and planetary work
  • Good for deep sky astrophotography (but not as convenient and more difficult to use than Catadioptrics)
  • Free of color aberration due to the use of a primary mirror

Newtonian Disadvantages

  • Generally not suited for terrestrial applications
  • Slight light loss due to secondary (diagonal) obstruction when compared with Refractors

I purchased the Nexstar 130 SLT package (Telescope, Lens kit, and Power tank) about a year ago. This was my first telescope, so this package was a great way for me to get everything I needed in one shot. Set-up is very easy, the go-to computer is straight forward and simple to operate. The lens/accessory kit is very useful, with the included barlow lens inside the kit, it will expand your night observations rather than just using the stock 25mm & 9mm eye pieces. The power tank keeps my telescope going all night long, even while simultaneously powering my laptop computer or other things I can plug into it. I was also surprised to see that the power tank could be use to jump start your car in the rare even that you ever needed a jump start without another car around.

I only had two complaints with this telescope. The first being how sensitive it is to vibrations. I therefore purchased some vibration suppression pads and it took care of the problem... while the pads don't get rid of all vibrations, it was a huge improvement. The second complaint was that the maker doesn't have a case for it, but I eventually found a padded soft case for it on another telescope makers website.

I use my telescope at public star parties with a local Astrological Society in the Southern California area. I get many compliments and "wow's" from people that look through my telescope. Bottom line is this.... It's a great value!

-Sky Align is pretty nifty but doesn't always move you to just the right spot (perhaps that's on the opperator, though)
-Wanted an adapter for eyepiece to feed into computer for many to view at same time-guy ont the phone said to go with the neximage. It is worthless unless you're producing pictures from the "stacked" frames and even then I wasn't impressed.
-Lot of wobbling and moving when trying to adjust the focus. Makes the 6mm lens with the Barlow very difficult.
-Not as awesome magnification as what the pictures on the website made it look but it is an introductory telescope
-The tracking feature is very useful.
-Even without a carrying case it is pretty portable and quick to set up and align
-Again, the bad advice on the Neximage really made the telecope much less useful for my group settings (with students)

Comments about Celestron NexStar 130 SLT Telescope Bundle:

I am not a beginner but it has been years since my last telescope, a Celestron C90 which my son has now taken over with my very hardy approval. It was a good starter telescope. I wanted to move ahead but not to extreme for my next scope. I purchased another Celestron due my very satisfied use of the the previous model. The packaged arrived in great shape and I found the instructions for assembling was very easy to follow. I verified it was collimated and no scratches and looked forward to my first evening of use. The evening the scope arrived I found clear sky's and proceeded to align the scope. It was easier than I thought it would be. It is now second nature. My first view was M31 spiral galaxy. What a view to behold. I am now monitoring the night sky's as much as I can. This is a great hobby to get back into now that I am retired and I look forward to it every evening.
In addition, the bundle is the way to go. No need for batteries and the eyepiece kit was a great start. The power pack came ready to go so I did not have to charge it for the first use. The only thing I was concerned about was if the power connection from the power pack to the scope would be included. My concern was answered when I found two connectors, one with the scope and one with the power pack. I was ready to go....

Comments about Celestron NexStar 130 SLT Telescope Bundle:

The Nexstar 130SLT was extremely easy to setup and start using immediately. The alignment function is very easy to use for a beginner. I've only been able to use it one night so far but I spent hours searching and viewing and trying different eyepieces and filters. The only downsides are the manual is a bit out of date. (still mentions Win95) and the PC interface still uses a Serial DB9 connector. The Power Tank will work with an extra cable for about $25.

        Customer Q & A

Q1: What do the different filters do? Is there one that you can view the Sun?

A: The filters with this kit are used to change the color skew of the object being viewed. For example, if you were to look at mars and it looks too red to make out a good amount of detail, you can apply a blue filter and the details would "pop" out. We do have filters that will allow you to view the sun. They are called solar filters and they can be applied to the end of your telescope so that you can view the sun.

Q2: is there a case for the 130slt?

A: There is no case available for the Celestron 130SLT at this time.

Q3: How much does it weigh? How small will it fold into? Is it easily transportable?

A: The telescope's complete weight is 18 lbs. The telescope can detach from the mount and the tripod can fold down but it will require some separation of pieces to break it down. Once you break it down it is easy to transport.
