Description

Like the popular Schmidt-Cassegrain, the Vixen VMC is a true all-purpose telescope. Despite its long focal length the tube is only about 50cm (20") long. As a result the instrument is very portable. With its large aperture of 260mm the VMC collects enough light for serious visual and photographical applications both on the planets and on the deep sky. The VMC has a very good contrast. It is an excellent telescope for observing globular clusters, double stars and distant planets. With its open tube the telescope cools down quicker than an SCT or classical Maksutov-Cassegrain.

Another strong point of this telescope is its capability for high grade astro imaging. The meniscus correcting lens offers a large corrected field. With the optional reducer you get shorter exposure times. The basic configuration already contains a piggy-back camera holder. You can then take photos both through the telescope and using a telephoto lens parallel to the main instrument, or you can take the VMC260 for guiding while the camera sits on top.

Comments about Vixen VMC260L Modified Cassegrain Optical Tube Assembly:

Well built, very good optics. Open tube design cuts dew problem. Diffraction spikes on bright objects due to 4 vane spider (visual). One of the few compact OTA's that excel as a visual AND imaging platform, which is probably the main strength of this model. Flat field (flatter than typical SCT). Plenty of back focus with moving mirror focus (like SCT). Telescopes.com site (and some others), list the WRONG specs (someone seems to have copied the VMC200L specs instead of 260L). OTA is almost 26 inches long, not 20. Focal length is 3000, not 1950. Aperture is clearly 260mm, not 200. Also, there is no diagonal or eyepieces included as stated in the description. If you are looking for a 10" compact OTA that is a very good performer and displays the classic Vixen build quality, then this may be your scope, although pricey. I am happy with mine.
