Q1: Can one do astrophotography with this? My budget is about $1000(really want a Meade 10- or 12-inch LX200 SCT) and aperature rules, this 12-inch sounds right but I would want to later take pictures of planets and DSOs.
A: The Zhumell 12-inch Dobsonian is a great telescope. Like all Dobsonians, though, it's not adaptable to long-exposure astrophotography. You could certainly mate a digital camera to it with the appropriate adapters, but you'd be limited to one or two photos at a time without moving the scope the scope by hand to track the object you're shooting as the Earth rotates. For long-exposure astrophotography, you really need an equatorial mount or wedge and either a clock drive or GoTo capability.
