Description

The popularity of our NexStar 114 models inspired us to go bigger! We are proud to introduce the Celestron NexStar 130 SLT Computerized Telescope. The Celestron NexStar 130 SLT Computerized Telescope has 30% more light-gathering power than our 114mm telescope.

And the Celestron NexStar 130 SLT Computerized Telescope, like the other models in the SLT Series, comes with a fully computerized hand control. The computerized hand control gives you the ability to automatically track to view any of its 4,000+ objects, including over 600 galaxies, 300 clusters, and dozens of beautiful binary stars.

With its pre-assembled, adjustable steel tripod, the Celestron NexStar 130 SLT Computerized Telescope can be up and ready to use in a matter of minutes.

Begin to explore some of the fainter Messier objects using the additional light-gathering capabilities of the 130 SLT’s 5" primary mirror.

Because of the Newtonian design, the mirror gives fully color-corrected views that are best suited for astronomical use.

Portable, User-friendly Design

Powered by 8 AA user-supplied batteries or an optional AC adapter, this NexStar telescope is ready to travel. The internal battery compartment provides power to the high precision servo motors for rigid low-vibration performance while eliminating cord wrap issues associated with external battery packs. With the NexStar's ergonomically-designed hand control, the user is free to remove the hand control from its holder for remote use, or leave it cradled for hands-free operation. With a touch of a button you can select the object catalog, change the slew speed, view fascinating information about an object, or simply know if a desired object is visible in the sky.

Bought this telescope after a while searching for a good first telescope and it was a very good choice loved it and got to advance my astronomy hobby but the only bad thing about it is it wiggles with wind can be cut down if you add weight to the accessory tray thats the only reason i gave it a four star for. it was frustration with the alignment it was never accurate with the three stars align but got a star program and find my way around stars to align it using the two stars system after that it worked perfect.

On a calm, breezeless night, this scope is wonderful! With a 9mm eyepiece you will not only see the rings of Saturn but the shadow they cast on the planet. Use the auto two-star align and the go-to will get you in the ball park. You can easily dial it in from where the go-to drops you off. Take the time to adjust the red star pointer.
The main problem with this scope is that it only takes a light breath of air to send it wiggling. The tripod itself seems to be sturdy. The problem is the single attachment point where the control arm mates to the scopes tube. You cannot count on the batteries and need to purchase either the Celestron Power Tank ($55) or the A/C adapter ($20)and plug it in.
If you can keep this scope out of the wind, and I mean ANY wind, it will probably give you the most bang for your buck... in it's price range.

Comments about Celestron NexStar 130 SLT Computerized Telescope:

Back in April I wrote a negative review about this product but now I have changed my mind. The more time I spend using this telescope the more I like it. At first, I was very dissapointed, but now I am getting better at using the telesocpe, understand the sky above and reading a star map. It has made all the difference....Half the time when I was trying to find a galaxy or other object I would get my directions mixed up and no wonder I couldnt find it! Last nite I was able to add one more thing to the list of objects I've been able to see with this telescope, it was the WHIRPOOL Galaxy. Although it was very faint and easy to lose sight of, it was still quite amazing to see something that is SOOOOOOO far away. I now realize that I shouldnt have jumped to conclusions and wrote a negative review. The one thing I still have a problem with however, is the shakey tripod, but its not that bad. I can live with it. I would buy this product again and encourage alot of people to buy it as well. Its a great novice telescope.

Comments about Celestron NexStar 130 SLT Computerized Telescope:

For the price, this is an excellent telescope for astronomy beginners. It only took a few minutes to set up, and it is lightweight and compact enough to take camping or on a road trip. The tripod is fairly stable with good clamps for locking the legs which make it easy to level and keep leveled. The scope did not require any collimation out of the box. The alignment process was easy, but when choosing objects for alignment, I found it is best to choose the BRIGHTEST celestial object in the area, or it may assume the bright star selected is a brighter, nearby planet. I've used lenses from 32.5mm (20x magnification) to a 6mm with a Barlow (216x). At the higher levels stability is an issue, but with a 25mm lens (26x), the ring of Saturn and phase of Venus were clearly discernable. I've been star gazing since 1979 and the ease of locating objects with the GOTO technology make this scope affordable fun. Suggested improvements would be a fine tune focus adjustment knob and a way to manually point the scope that will not damage the tracking system. I would suggest buying an external power source, since it can burn batteries rather quickly (2 hrs) and must be realigned when the power is disconnected.

Service and delivery comments:

Delivery was prompt. Despite some damage to the box, the well-packed contents were undamaged. Instructions were easy to understand, so no customer service was needed.

Comments about Celestron NexStar 130 SLT Computerized Telescope:

Can I say, "Purchase Two"? . . . Great Scope, easy to assemble; (20 mins from un-wrap to enter GOTO pad) It works, simple, easy; and well worth It's value. Quality Optics, with the motor drive so sensitive It tracked Saturn at nearly 300 Mag, for hours. Mars? One button and Mars was centered in view! . . .

Comments about Celestron NexStar 130 SLT Computerized Telescope:

Although I've been able to see the Moon, Venus, Saturn, Jupiter, and the Orion Nebula, I wouldnt recommend this telescope to anyone BECAUSE The GoTo feature absolutley NEVER works. I decided to see if it was accurate after I succesfully aligned three bright stars by punching in the star Betelgeuse, it went off in the other direction and kind of pointed towards the ground. The only reason I wanted this one was becasue of the GoTo feature, but it is never accurate, and I realized its kind of cheating anyways. The images that I have seen through the telescope are decent but its very hard to focus AND its so SHAKEY! (I wouldnt extend the tripod legs too much or it will just get worse) You will NOT be able to see any galaxies or nebula (apart from Orion) with this telescope. That was very dissapointing. I thought I could get a little more bang for my buck([$]!!!!!!), but I was definitley mistaken. Im going to sell this telescope on ebay considering I waited to long to return it and I'm going to buy a Dobsonian 8" for the same price, I should have done this to begin with!!

        Customer Q & A

        1 - 5 of 12
            1   2

Q1: Can I use an erecting eye piece on this to make the image upright?

A: Yes, as long as it is the erecting eyepiece it will work to correct the image in any reflector.

Q2: I live in an area with several companies with lights. I also have several street lights near my house. I can see a few stars by eye. Will I still be able to see enough to make buying this telescope worth while? Will a bigger telescope better overcome the background light problem?

A: "Worthwhile" is a relativistic term. What I will tell you is that we have customers who use their 14 inch scopes off of balconies on Manhattan Island (light and pollution everywhere) and they love their telescopes. They still hate light pollution, but they love and use the scopes.

Q3: I am thinking about getting the Celestron NexStar 130 SLT. Is it capable of doing more stuff then the NexSar 60, 80, 102, and 114 SLT and in what ways? Also, if I get the Nexstar 130 SLT, I was going to get the Celestron Eyepiece and Filter Kit - 1.25 Inch Format. Will the kit match up with the telescope and is it duplicating what I would be getting with the telescope? The telescope's user level is listed as intermediate, but I would say that I am at a beginner level, would that be an impediment for me in operating the telescope?

A: A telescope with a 130mm aperture, such as the NexStar 130SLT has, is capable of gathering more light than one with a smaller primary mirror. Hence, you'll be able to see more distant objects, and your views of closer objects will be brighter under high magnification. The 130 SLT is intermediate in capability, but that doesn't mean a beginner can't operate it. The GoTo feature should simplify finding celestial objects for you. The eyepiece & filter kit will work nicely with the 130SLT. You will be duplicating the 9mm eyepiece, but since that's one you'll be using often, it might be a good idea to have a spare.

Q4: Can this telescope see planets, nebula's, galaxies and other deep space objects?

A: Yes, Celestron's NexStar 130 SLT will let you see deep-space objects. Every telescope has limitations, however, and the NexStar 130 is no exception. Its 5.12-inch optics will allow it to see out to Magnitude 13+. That's enough to bring in light from about 15 million stars, but a telescope with larger optics will bring in more.

Q5: Can you take pictures with this telescope?

A: Although this scope cannot take pictures out of the box, you can take pictures with the Celestron NexStar 130 SLT provided you have the necessary accessories such as a CCD imager or camera adapters.
