The finderscope is the only thing I can honestly complain about. I solved that by installing a Celestron Star Pointer Finderscope. Now it's simple to find objects.

I have seen nice views of the moon, the bands of Jupiter, the Flame Nebula, and many other wonders. Once I got the feel for using an equatorial mount, things became much easier.

The images submitted were my first try at imaging. Jupiter in the 10mm Eyepiece was much brighter and sharper.

I'm an amateur astronomer and have a good deal of experience with more advanced telescopes. I bought this for my nephew as an introductory scope. Overall, I'm very pleased with the mirror optics and mount. It delivers good views of the planets and the Orion Nebula. The mount and focusing are stable. The telescope seems mostly rugged and is relatively lightweight.

The main con: I read about people having problems with the finderscope, and can confirm that the finder is absolutely a nightmare. For starters, the battery casing was broken and I could not get the finder to work. Others online recommended taking it apart to solder a wire that tends to break inside the battery compartment. Sure enough, I opened it up and found the wire broken. The finder lit up after I soldered the connector back together. I was shocked to discover that the design of the finder is completely useless for pointing the telescope in the dark. The red dots are not even remotely comparable to better designed Telrad or even Celestron red dot (1x dot projected at infinity) finders. To point the finder, you have to line up two red dots and while your eye is focused on the sky it is impossible to focus on the red dots. So, after trying for several hours, I was unable to calibrate the red dots such that they would help me to point the scope in the correct place. Instead, I had to get it approximately in the correct part of the sky and then scan around. This was frustrating for me, and I know it would be very frustrating for a new user. If you buy this telescope, it is extremely important to also buy and install a finder that works, such as the Celestron red dot finder.

My other complaint concerns the poor quality of the 20 mm eyepiece. It was lightweight, plastic, and inverts the image (bad for astronomical viewing). While the image of the orion nebula was pleasant, the 20 mm does not provide an exceptionally wide field of view. To get the most out of this telescope, consider buying a 40 mm super plossl. You'll be able to see through the scope easier, see the whole moon, and find small objects that are hard to hit with higher magnification. The 10 mm eyepiece was acceptable, but will not deliver a very high level of magnification. Consider also buying a 2x or 3x barlow to enlarge the planets and to use with your 40 mm plossl or just buy a 5 mm plossl eyepiece.

Aside from the finder and the eyepiece, the telescope was a good deal at the discounted price, but I would not recommend buying this scope without also buying a better finder.

The Hayneedle website was quick and easy through the purchasing process. My item was delivered ahead of schedule.
Most of the assembly instuctions were straightforward, yet for a first-time telescope owner, some instuctions were lacking or had terminology I was not familiar with. It will take some time to learn all the nuances for seamless operation.

Comments about Celestron AstroMaster 114 EQ Reflector Telescope:

This is a very nice telescope for a beginner but the directions leave a lot to be desired. Set up took way longer than it should have plus the description of one of the lenses (directions said 20mm lens when it was only a 10mm) was described incorrectly. This made for a scramble through the box only to find that the directions were incorrect.
Other than the extended set up time so far so good.
Purchase through Hayneedle was easy and painless. Shipping was very quick.

Comments about Celestron AstroMaster 114 EQ Reflector Telescope:

I am only giving this 3 stars for it is complicated to collimate "align" the mirrors. And, reflectors need continuous collimation. So, as a beginners telescope, you REALLY need to know what you are doing to keep the mirrors aligned. But, I wouldn't give the scope one star because there are many things which are good about it.

        Pros:

        1. The mount is nice and stable.
        2. Catadioptric lens which basically doubles it's power by giving it a 1000mm (f/9) focal length unlike other short tube designs that have f/4.5 focal length.
        3. You get an equatorial mount which can track objects in the sky as they move across the heavens and declination and right ascension axis's with dials to help you find objects you normally would not find with the naked eye. And, with a motor drive, the telescope will track by itself.
        4. The mirrors are of sensible quality.
        5. It has a dove tail mount for quick mounting of the optical tube to the equatorial mount.

        Cons:

        1. By using a catadioptric lens, it's complicated to align the mirrors.
        2. The scope uses a plastic focuser, which doesn't help in aligning the mirrors either.
        3. Comes with two 20mm lenses (One of them erecting,) so, you have no higher power eye pieces. Just a Barlow lens 2X.

When the telescope arrived, it was shipped in shipping container the same size as the retail box. The retail box had only cardboard holding the optical tube in place, so, the tube was completely out of alignment from all the jarring during shipment. The focuser uses a plastic sleeve. Once I removed it, I found the catadioptric lens form fitted into the sleeve. And, there is no way to adjust it's angle. Also, the eyepiece holder is screwed on plastic threads and was off alignment, which meant using a laser collimator as you would normally use it to be completely impossible. Long tube crosshair sight tube collimators won't work on this model, either.

I was able to collimate it accurately and got very nice sharp images, but it took a lot of work and experimentation, trying different ideas and tricks until I figured it out.

IF you are going to buy this model, I would suggest that you understand and have experience in collimating a reflector telescope or find someone who does. To gain that extra magnification power of having the special lens in a short tube design is a trade off in my opinion. Short tubes are less bulky, but the long tubes are far easier to align when alignment is needed.
