  • Description

Anyone who has spent much time in the field looking at stars with amateur astronomers is sure to have heard the term "light bucket." Effective yet inexpensive, "light buckets" provide amateur astronomers with the aperture needed to view faint deep sky objects. With the quality and precision designed into the Zhumell Dobson 8-inch, you can have a really nice bucket for gathering all of that starlight.

With a traditional Dobsonian mount, the Dobson 8-inch is easy to use. A 2-inch dual-speed crayford focuser accepts a full range of 1.25-inch and 2-inch format eyepieces. Finding the stars has never been easier now that the Zhumell comes with a Right Angle Correct Image (RACI) finderscope. The 8-inch aluminum oxide/silver oxide-coated, center-marked mirror provides excellent contrast and definition and offers 1/12-wave wavefront accuracy, along with 92-94% reflectivity.

Combine these features with a cooling fan, quick collimation screws (for easy alignment of your mirror), a black optical tube (which will acclimate to environmental more quickly than other colors), and an included laser collimator (to make alignment of your mirrors even easier), and you will see that the Zhumell Dobson telescopes are more like 5-gallon pails filled with spectacular views than your standard, everyday light bucket.

I purchased this 8" dobsonian after doing a lot of research in to the quality of this scope and how it compared to another popular brand 8" dobsonian telescope. I read all the reviews [@]and found them to be very useful. This scope appears to be virtually identical to the other dobsonian in many ways. The Zhumell ,however, comes with some nice additions that the other one does not.The zhumell comes with a 9mm 1.25" lens and a 25mm wide field lens in a 2"format.The scope also comes with a fan for the mirror already attached to the mirror housing. The other one comes with a 9mm and a 25mm in a 1.25"format and no fan. [...].Assembly was very easy it took me about 20 minutes to assemble the base and mount the scope. I did experience some of the problems with the telescope hardware and the base that others have described, both here in the reviews section and on other web sites. The rings that are supplied for you to pull on so that you can mount the tension springs to the optical tube are flimsy and are stretching out after using them 5 times. They are also very painful to use,as they will dig into your finger.A trip to the hardware store will solve this problem, just buy a larger and beefier ring. I also found that after two weeks one of the lower spring mounting bolts was beginning to pull out of the particle board side support. There is an insert threaded into a hole that only goes halfway through the panel. The incredible tension from the spring is too much for the insert. Again a trip to the hardware store will fix this. I purchased two bolts 4" long and of the same diameter and thread pitch of the bolt supplied.I also picked up 4 2" flat washers, two regular nuts and two vinyl locking nuts. I drilled a hole as big as the bolt through the side panel leaving the insert in the side panel, using it as a guide for the drill bit.I put the bolt through a 2" washer and threaded it in from the inside of the mount through the insert and out the other side.I then put on another 2" washer and tightened it down with a standard type of nut. I installed the original bushing that came with the scope for the spring mount, the spring and the supplied washer, and then the vinyl locking nut then I just cut off the exposed bolt and filed it smooth. This is much stronger than the original design and I have had no more problems with it.I have added some pictures of the finished product at the bottom of this review to show what it looks like. I also recommend checking every nut and bolt for tightness. Many of the nut were not much more than finger tight. You may have to remove the mirror assembly to access some of the nuts but that is a simple procedure. Just be very careful with the mirror after you have removed it. A bit of low strength locktite on all the nuts and bolts is recommended. All that being said, this telescope is a very nice telescope.I have had it out 3 times since purchasing it on 3/20/2008 and have been very pleased with the views. Saturn is a beautiful sight through the 9mm lense. I have pulled 3 galaxies out of a light polluted eastern sky,M81 M82 and M51, in Ursa Major. The 25mm lense works best for the deep sky objects such as the previously mentioned galaxies and provides stunning views of star clusters.I stongly recommend this telescope [@].

I just got this telescope a couple weeks ago and most days have been cloudy and very very cold so I haven't used it as much as I would have liked. I am however mildly dissapointed so far. I can barely seen the orion nebula with the telescope, the moon was clearer on my old 60mm refractor, and also I couldn't see any surface detail on Mars. I'm going to try and get a filter for that. It is awesome that you can see stars pretty much anywhere in the sky with this telescope so I'm hopeful the more objects I look at the better the views will be. I do however really like the dobsonian mount on this telescope its fairly easy to carry around and doesn't take up a lot of room. It's also very easy to point at stars. However I was having a hard time using the finderscope to locate objects so I put a red dot finder on there which is much easier. So for now I would rely on the other reviews and still recomend this.

Comments about Zhumell 8-Inch Dobsonian Reflector Telescope:

Great scope. Everyone who has looked through it has been impressed with the optics. Clear views, and a great light bucket. The right angle view finder is great, the eyepieces included are good (not great), the overall design and included fan are good. You will need to do a little modding. For example, take off the mirror and screw in the pivot screws better and/or use some locktite. The base is good, but not superior, you may want to use a clip (available at hardware store) instead of bold & nut due to unscrewing. When looking at something low on the horizon with a large eyepiece or barlow you may get some drift, buy a couple of felt magnets or make your own out of speaker coils. Make these mods and add a telrad and this is GREAT. Especially for price. No problems, will be happy until you suffer aperture fever. (But then I'd need a bigger car).

I purchased this scope for my sons birthday.[...]. And the base rotates on a slip spindle which I am sure will be lost any day in the grass.Looking through the scope was a pleasant surprise though....we easily focused it on the moon and got comfortable using it. The next night we focused on a bright star and discovered it was Jupiter! You could clearly see its shape and what we assume are moos or satelites around it with the stock eyepiece. [...] The scope on the other hand has been great so far and my son loves it even though according to him they ruined his birthday.I would reccomend the scope to others you will enjoy it!

Comments about Zhumell 8-Inch Dobsonian Reflector Telescope:

The 2 inch eyepiece very comfortable and over all quality of the telescope is very good. I elimintated the heavy springs for bungy cords, I feel the scope is heavy enough to rest on the dobsinian mount with out a lot of support. I modified a furniture dolly to move it in and out of the house so it is easy to relocate on my patio for the best view. Jupitor (and its moons), Alberio and several g. clusters have been easy to locate and view. The 9mm brings the faint objects into better view, but I prefer the 26mm and its wider view. This is a great all around scope and a major upgrade from my 4 inch reflector.

Comments about Zhumell 8-Inch Dobsonian Reflector Telescope:

Bought the scope because I am not prepared to buy an auto-guided scope yet, but I wanted something bigger than my 4.5 reflector. Easy to assemble and use. Easy for kids to use. The scope wasn't even as heavy as I thought it would be. The only problem I have is the side-mount springs to attach the optical tube. They are stiff and require strong hands to put in place. I remedied this by adding some length to the spring pull.

Great for begginers and proffessionals. I have seen Jupiter and six of its moons and it all looks great. The only complaint is the lack of instruction in the instruction manual. But other than that it is a great telescope.
