Description

A bestselling item by Zhumell, the Eclipse 114 Reflector Telescope with motor drive offers ample of power for deep-sky viewing. It's also very easy to use, making it a perfect choice for the beginning astronomer, yet advanced enough for the more technically adept. With its 114mm aperture, this telescope gathers sufficient light for stunning lunar observation, detailed stargazing, and exciting planetary views.

Equipped with motor drive, this telescope automatically compensates for the rotation of the earth. That means once you locate your desired object, no further adjustments are required. The celestial object will remain in the eyepiece's field of view, without any of the vibrations associated with manual adjustments disrupting your observation.

With its user-friendly equatorial mount, multi-coated optics for clear images, tripod, and clock motor drive, all at an unbeatable price, a beginning user truly can't go wrong with this telescope. There's even a full three-year warranty from Zhumell to provide some peace of mind.

Key features include:

  • Large 114mm aperture for powerful light gathering
  • Built-in motor drive for automatic object tracking
  • Adjustable, full-size tripod
  • Handy accessory tray
  • Equatorial mount with slow motion controls
  • 1.25-inch focuser

(the tube)
I could just make out stripes on Jupiter, image was very large I am very happy with the light gathering capability, haven't made it out to a dark sky yet, but from what I saw this is very capable. It is compact, a custom case could make this fit in a relatively small space.

(Optics)
The case of extra lenses combined with the quality ones that come with the scope is great. The Barlow that comes with the scope is pathetic, but the one in the upgrade case is amazing. I found the spotter scope to be just fine. There is a trick to setting these types-I'll elaborate later in the review. Over all the optics are phenomenal, plus they give room to grow. This scope can incorporate half the lenses in the case, the rest are too powerful and will be useful when I get a 8" Dobsonian. This will remain my on the go scope.

(mount)
The tripod is supreme, sorta shaky with initial adjustments, but alleviates fast and use of the tracking knobs is very smooth.

(book)
The book is useful for finding a dozen or two constellations, and throws around a few concepts that are helpful. The book will not identify planets specifically in the sky, it will help with a couple nebulae, but no galaxies are identified. I recommend "Star Watch" it starts where this book leaves off.

(overall)
I think it is a steal at this sale price. When you get a better scope the optics are great for duel use, like I said there is enough here so that it will grow with you.

(setting the 3 screw spotter)
This is an easy way to set up the spotter scope, (no directions provided); first loosen all 3 screws. Using the weakest eyepiece point the main scope at a very bright object in the sky that you can easily identify through the main scope and the spotter. Now Center object in main scope, and while quickly looking into the spotter- hold the spotter with one hand centered on the object and with your free hand bring the screws in as quick as possible. look through the main scope again and re-center the object. Now finely look again through the spotter and adjust using only the screws.......That is it! ........................................................usually takes a few shots. Don't worry about getting the screws very tight just get the spotter centered on the object. And use your scope!.... You may do it a few times in the night but it becomes quick and easy. As you get better, you will get the screws tighter, and will only have to do it once:) You will be a master after one night. if you don't have the patience for this, I don't understand how you could possibly be interested in astronomy..LOL

This was my first telescope purchase. It's a pretty good value at this price point and fit within my budget. I didn't expect it to be as good as the more expensive ones on the market, but I think the Zhumell telescope is better quality than many of the cheap department store telescopes on the market.

The equatorial mount, once polar aligned, allowed me to track celestial objects by simply turning the RA axis knob occasionally. I also tried the motor drive but had some difficulty obtaining a speed that would keep the object in the center of the eyepiece for more than a minute or two. Maybe some more practice will bring better results. Also, I found some difficulty turning the motor drive on and off at will because a thumbscrew has to be tightened to fit into a notched groove on the RA axis. This groove moves whenever you turn the RA adjustment knob, which you do to center objects in the eyepiece. However, when you turn the RA knob to align it with the thumbscrew on the motor drive, it may move the object out of view in your eyepiece.

The tripod is lightweight which is a plus for portability. However, it doesn't fold up easily because of the triangular tray in the middle. The tray is nice to have for placing eyepieces however, and I'm glad it is there. The tripod is not very stable, but I don't expect that from a budget mount. In spite of the instability, objects would stay pretty steady in the eyepiece if I didn't bump the telescope.

I'd like to add a homemade piggyback mount for doing wide-angle astrophotography later. I seriously doubt the mount would be stable enough for photography of deep-space objects.

The declination circle has 0 degrees for the home position with the OTA being in alignment with the polar axis of the scope. From what I've read online, I understand this to be in error -- it should read 90 degrees in that position, so you'll need to do some mental arithmetic to use the coordinate system properly. I've read that most amateur astronomers with a mount like this use star hopping to find objects anyway, so it probably doesn't matter.

The finder scope is a little flimsy and isn't very bright. I'm afraid to bump it because it might slip out of alignment rather easily. I might add a non-magnifying finder scope on the OTA to supplement it.

The eyepiece bundle gives me a good selection of eyepieces. I like using the wide angle, 32 mm eyepiece. The 4 mm can also give a lot of magnification. I found atmosphere conditions limiting my viewing of Jupiter to 9 mm or so. Beyond that it looked blurry. I'm unsure how the eyepieces rate in optical quality, but am glad to have the extra eyepiece bundle. I haven't tried the filters yet.

The 114mm aperture isn't as big as larger scopes, but it gathers a decent amount of light for viewing the brighter objects as well as many dimmer objects that aren't visible to the naked eye. I was able to see the Orion M42 nebula last night under light polluted skies.

Overall, I'm happy with this scope as my first purchase. I've mentioned several negative aspects, but I'm able to accept them because I had lower expectations for this price point. If I had more money to spend, I would look elsewhere, but I think this was a good value for my budget.

the process from start to finish was awesome. the telescope does exactly what they say. some people said it was hard to put together but I found it to be easy. I have never used a telescope before but I know this 1 is very good quality for the price. I just can't say enough good things about hayneedle and the telescope.

Comments about Zhumell Eclipse 114 with Motor Drive Telescope Bundle:

This is my first scope and I could not be happier. Assembly was a breeze, and Zhumell apparently has remedied the issues they were experiencing with the quality of their directions (in the box were full color step by step directions). I would definitely recommend the bundle as the 2 stock lens leave much to be desired. My first night I used the lunar filter with the 32 mm plossl eye piece and experienced amazingly detailed views of the moon. After about a half hour I switched to filter 21 and took my first look at Jupiter. The planet itself was a large red dot and my amateur eye could clearly make out at least 4 moons. The motor drive kept jupiter in frame for well over 30 mins. Great buy.

Comments about Zhumell Eclipse 114 with Motor Drive Telescope Bundle:

        Positives:
Great scope for people who are starting out. Fist night I got amazing and crisp views of the moon with the 32mm, 32mm + Barlow and 12mm eye pieces. You can make out every crater with fantastic clarity.

Second night I was able to find Jupiter with 3 moons (32mm lens + Barlow is great for this). It was a bit difficult to focus due to vibration and image moving out of field of view quickly, but I saw the stripes with the 12mm and 9mm lenses. Seeing Jupiter from your own driveway is quite something.

        Negatives:
It takes a little tinkering with all the screws and knobs (and counter weight) to get the image where you want it, and keep it in view.

The finder scope is a cheap piece of plastic. I was expecting more of a rifle scope type of optic and mount, but it does the job after careful adjustment.

The motor drive took me a while to figure out. Then it worked well for a few minutes, but then the provided 9V batteries died. (18 deg Michigan weather is to blame).

        Service and delivery comments:

Great service from Hayneedle. Scope and optics came ahead of schedule!

Also helpful and friendly on the phone when calling with questions. I'll be ordering here again.
