About Celestron Refractor Telescopes

Celestron’s high-quality refractor telescopes allow beginners to improve upon Galileo’s vision with a simple, reliable design that is easy to use, requires minimal maintenance, and is versatile enough for land or sky viewing. Known for viewing planetary detail and splitting close double-stars.

A refractor telescope uses a lens as the primary. The lens at the front of the telescope bends the light passing through it until it comes to a single point called the “focal plane”. The long, thin tubes of refractor telescopes look much the same as those Galileo used centuries ago. High quality optical glass and multi-coatings provide today’s sky watchers views Galileo never dreamed of.

The refractor type of telescope is very popular with individuals who want mechanical simplicity, rugged reliability and ease of use. Because the focal length is limited by the length of the tube, refractor telescopes become quite bulky and expensive beyond a four inch aperture. This limits the light gathering properties of refractor telescopes, but it is an excellent choice for beginners and those who prefer simple operation and versatility. Refractor telescopes are also a popular choice because of their unobstructed view, high contrast and good definition.

Refractor Advantages

  • Easy to set-up and use
  • Simple and reliable design requires little or no maintenance
  • Excellent for lunar, planetary and binary star observing especially in larger apertures
  • Good for terrestrial viewing
  • High contrast images with no secondary mirror or diagonal obstruction
  • Color correction is good in achromatic designs and excellent in apochromatic and fluorite designs
  • Sealed optical tube reduces image-degrading air currents and protects optics
  • Objective lens is permanently mounted and aligned

Refractor Disadvantages

  • More expensive per inch of aperture than Newtonians or Catadioptrics
  • Heavier, longer and bulkier than equivalent aperture Newtonians and Catadioptrics
  • The cost and size factors limit the practical maximum size primary to smaller apertures
  • Some color aberration in achromatic designs (doublet)

Comments about Celestron Omni XLT 120 Refractor Telescope:

A rugged, high quality and versatile scope that I will probably use much more often than my bigger scope because it is easier to transport and quicker to set up. The German equatorial mount is very solid and the optical clarity is outstanding. I will probably upgrade to the 2" diagonal and lenses at some point but the 1.25" diagonal and lens that comes with the scope was even better than I expected. The telescope arrived in excellent condition and precisely as scheduled. An overall good buying experience.

Comments about Celestron Omni XLT 120 Refractor Telescope:

This is the first telescope I have owned since I was a kid. I did a lot of research and made a good choice with the Omni XLT120 for my reintroduction to astronomy. This is a well built solid telescope. The CG-4 mount is very sturdy and provides a solid base for casual observing and astrophotography. It is heavy, almost 50lbs,so if you have any lifting limitations due to health issues, this is not the telescope for you.I am glad I bought the Celestron filter and lense kit with the telescope.I had a beautiful view of Saturn last week with the 6mm eyepiece.I plan on purchasing motor drives for the mount in the near future.

Comments about Celestron Omni XLT 120 Refractor Telescope:

This is my first telescope and I must say I was surprised by the size even after hearing again and again about it. It is a LARGE refractor and weighs a solid 50+ lbs once set up on the tripod. That being said the build quality is wonderful and the optics seem great for the money. I obviously don't have much for a point of reference but the views of the moon, Orion and Jupiter have been great. I can't wait to actually get it out to darker skies and start exploring. Being a nearly 5" refractor it seems to have great light-gathering potential and I plan on pushing it up to around 300x. I've read elsewhere of people pushing them even further with good views.

I definitely think it's a great beginner scope because it seems to have excellent potential to grow with you. Right out of the box it is very capable with some new eyepieces. Replace the stock 1.25" diagonal with a 2" one and add 2" eyepieces, etc. The tripod can be motorized and polar-aligned.

I plan on keeping this scope for a VERY long time.

Comments about Celestron Omni XLT 120 Refractor Telescope:

This is a great scope with a nice sturdy mount. I've had the older mount and this mount is 100 times better. The scope is well crafted and has great views. I use this scope with Televue eyepieces and a Minus Violet filter so I really don't see much false color. Scope is large and has great views. Great bargain for what you get.

          Customer Q & A

Q1: Is the Equatorial Mount suitable for terrestrial viewing?

A: Yes. The equatorial mount has a good slew applied to its movement which makes it ideal for terrestrial viewing.

Q2: Which accessories are most useful or helpful to purchase with this scope? I would like to use it for both planetary and deep sky viewing.

A: The only thing that I could recommend right off the bat would be a nice eyepiece and filter kit.  The different eyepieces would allow you to really investigate different star clusters and galaxies.  And the filter set would be great for looking at the moon or mars.

Q3: Does this model provide "erect images" like astro90EQ?

A: Yes, the Celestron Omni XLT 120 Refractor Telescope provides erect images.
