About Celestron Refractor Telescopes

Celestron’s high-quality refractor telescopes allow beginners to improve upon Galileo’s vision with a simple, reliable design that is easy to use, requires minimal maintenance, and is versatile enough for land or sky viewing. Known for viewing planetary detail and splitting close double-stars.

A refractor telescope uses a lens as the primary. The lens at the front of the telescope bends the light passing through it until it comes to a single point called the “focal plane”. The long, thin tubes of refractor telescopes look much the same as those Galileo used centuries ago. High quality optical glass and multi-coatings provide today’s sky watchers views Galileo never dreamed of.

The refractor type of telescope is very popular with individuals who want mechanical simplicity, rugged reliability and ease of use. Because the focal length is limited by the length of the tube, refractor telescopes become quite bulky and expensive beyond a four inch aperture. This limits the light gathering properties of refractor telescopes, but it is an excellent choice for beginners and those who prefer simple operation and versatility. Refractor telescopes are also a popular choice because of their unobstructed view, high contrast and good definition.

Refractor Advantages

  • Easy to set-up and use
  • Simple and reliable design requires little or no maintenance
  • Excellent for lunar, planetary and binary star observing especially in larger apertures
  • Good for terrestrial viewing
  • High contrast images with no secondary mirror or diagonal obstruction
  • Color correction is good in achromatic designs and excellent in apochromatic and fluorite designs
  • Sealed optical tube reduces image-degrading air currents and protects optics
  • Objective lens is permanently mounted and aligned

Refractor Disadvantages

  • More expensive per inch of aperture than Newtonians or Catadioptrics
  • Heavier, longer and bulkier than equivalent aperture Newtonians and Catadioptrics
  • The cost and size factors limit the practical maximum size primary to smaller apertures
  • Some color aberration in achromatic designs (doublet)

Comments about Celestron Omni XLT 150R Refractor Telescope:

First of all, Hayneedle's customer service is superb.

A lot of people have mentioned that this scope is just for deep sky object, but it is very good on planets also. Just need to know which filter to use to reduce the chromatic aberration.

This is a fantastic scope, I've seen objects that I have never seen on my other refractor and a reflector that are about the same size.

Fantastic Item, Fantastic Customer service from Hayneedle and Celestron.

Comments about Celestron Omni XLT 150R Refractor Telescope:

This item is very heavy and sturdy feeling, it isn't cheap and flimsy feeling like other brands or models. I did the research on this specific one and I am very glad I bought it. I am able to see Saturn and beyond, brightly and extremely clearly from my observatory on my roof.

A telescope being heavy isn't a con, either.

Comments about Celestron Omni XLT 150R Refractor Telescope:

This is a very good scope for the money. I purchased the scope in November, and poor weather has limited my viewing to five or six sessions. However, these are my observations from those nights.
First, the overall feel of the scope and mount is very solid. The scope is a little undermounted on the supplied mount. However, this is only manifested in a few seconds of vibration after moving or focusing the scope.
The optics are very sharp. And the large lens means this scope sucks up tons of available light. So much so that I have used the provided lens cap with the center cap removed to reduce aperature when viewing the moon and planets. There is some chromatic abberation as would be expected with a short optical tube of this type. However, it has been much less than I feared. The addition of a minus violet filter has removed all but the slightest trace of false color. Views of Mars, Saturn, and the moon have been stunning. I was able to observe the Martian ice cap and dark "continental" features on Mars while viewing with a 5mm TeleView and 2.5X Powermate. This produces magnification of 375X. That is near the limit of the recommended power for the scope, However, images were sharp and full of detail.
One of the weaknesses of the scope is the focuser. Fine adjustments can be difficult. However, it proves servicable for most viewing.
I recommend this scope to anyone who wants a lot of scope on a budget. Sure, a triple lens 6" refractor would be nice. But that third lens comes at a very high price. The Celestron 150R will impress you.
