Telescope, Tripod
Introducing our SmartStar™-E-R80 Entry Level telescope system. Designed with the latest technology the 80 mm lens is crafted with a fluorite based, low dispersion glass that is ground and polished to exact specifications. The precision design is excellent for viewing bright stars, planets and their moons, as well as for bird watching and other land objects. Two eye pieces come standard to allow for flexibility in viewing either a wider field or a single focused object.
Alt-Azimuth Mount– The Cube™
The SmartStar™-E-R80 refractor telescope comes with our patented Alt-Azimuth Mount, a.k.a. The Cube™. This compact mount design is probably the most functional and flexible unit on the market. Both axis motors are built into a small single unit which is universally compatible with all telescopes using a dove-tail connection. In addition, there are no “dead spots” – so you can point your telescope to ANYWHERE above the horizon, whereas, other mounts block the telescope tube at certain points of rotation. This mount also comes standard with AC connection. An optional DC adapter is available so you can plug your telescope motor into your car if you’re camping or at any remote location.
The most easy to understand controller on the market
The GoToNovaTM Controller is much easier to use than other similar products. The hand controller is more intuitive with menu categories better organized. It also has a larger LCD screen with more lines of content compared with the competition. Using the easy-to-use hand controller and its large LCD screen, you can easily set up your telescope and select where you want to go.
More precise speed control for viewing objects
The control system also allows you to slew the telescope at 5 different drive speeds, keeping the object within the telescope’s viewfinder for as long as you wish.
Simply a better tripod
Made of 1-inch heavy-duty stainless steel the SmartStar™ Tripod is sturdy yet elegant, and gives the user unparalleled stability during operation. Solid construction joints keep your mount locked securely. With an all-metal support system your valuable telescope will keep still even on a windy night.
GoToNovaTM Computerized Control System
The revolutionary GoToNovaTM computerized control system is by far the most technologically advanced automated tracking system available on the market today. With a database of 5,000 celestial objects, including all of the most famous galaxies, nebulae, star clusters, not to mention the planets, you’ll be able to enjoy star gazing with the simple push of a button.

[...]Assembly was no problem and instructions were complete enough to understand.Saturday, set up in the light polluted back yard and leveled the mount as well as I couldand decided to do a two star alignment on stars about 180 degrees out. After that I just sat back and took in some "eye candy". The pleiades, Hyades, all well within the field of view in the 12.5 plossl. Swung over to m39. Man what a beautiful cluster. Stars were pinpoint all across the eyepiece. After a little more "orienting" myself I decided to call it a night. All in all a very rewarding evening.Probably the best small scope I've ever used and not a bad mount. Solid base, no problems with looseness here however a little bit ofslop in the horizontal shaft, but not to bad.A good scope and well worth the cost.

I wanted something to get started and involve the kids. I see now something in a much higher price range would have met my expectations better. As a daytime scope to spot/film wildlife this would be a winner for the price. For astronomy it is clear, easy to use, but leaves a lot to be desired in resolution.

Comments about iOptron SmartStar E R80 GoTo Refractor Telescope:
Easy once you figure out how to align it. May want to order better eyepieces than the ones that come with it. It was very simple to put together and so far seems pretty sturdy. When you align it make sure you put it in park position first and make sure the bubble level is centered. Then do first start align then do a second Star and your set.

This scope works, but the plastic parts worry me. I am afraid that normal use will result in breaking the scope.

Bought this for my husband's (and myself) birthday. I'd done a lot of research online to get the best quality for my dollar, and this telescope was everything I'd wanted and more. After set-up, you're able to immediately view specific items in the sky. Very cool!
