Q1: Is this telescope made in China?
A: The optics are ground in China but the manufacturing i done at Meade in california.
Q2: Is this refractor well suited for terrestrial view or not? What would you suggest if I want something of good value for both uses, better than this LXD75 AR6-AT, but in the same price range ($999 - $1200)?
A: You can definitely use this for both purposes however (as with all telescopes) you will need an erecting prism for terrestrial use.
Q3: Can you ship to the UK and the cost Many thanks. L.Austin
A: i am sorry but our dealer agreement with Meade does not allow us to ship any of their products outside the US. However we can ship all other brands of optics you may want to look ath the Celestron advanced series with GO-to telescopes as they will be the most comparable to the LXD-75 series from Meade.
Q4: How great an issue is chromatic abberation? This has always scared me away from achromatic refractors but this is such a sweet deal that I am sorely tempted. Thanks!
A: While achromatic lenses bring two primary colors (red and blue) into focus at the same point, they leave some uncorrected chromatic aberration at wavelengths in between. This variation is negligible for most purposes, overall it will not make much of an impact regarding your views through the scope. Keep in mind that there are apochromatic eyepieces that you can get as well which will help correct it if you need to.
Q5: I worry about the gears in the mount being not durable enough to handle a socpe with some weight. Is this a durable mount, (gears made out of metal, not plastic)? Also in another question, you said that a correcting prism is all that needed for teresteral viewing with a non-reversed and non-inverted image? Thank you Paul Underland
A: The gears are metal, not plastic. It's a good mount. You'll need an erecting prism if you want to use land objects. Bear in mind, though, that the equatorial mount doesn't lend itself well to land viewing.
