Comments about iOptron Solar 60 Telescope with Solar Filter and Electronic Eyepiece:

I purchased this Optron Solar Scope out of pure desperation. No one in the country had a solar filter for my Celestron 6SE telescope. I called every store, online retailer, and even places like [@], [@], [@], and [@]... EVERYONE IS OUT OF STOCK! That inlcuded Thousands Oaks, Orion, and apparently Celestron discontinued their line of solar filters (yet they are touting the May 20th eclipse and the Transit of Venus). Thus here we were... the only option was to purchase this Optron Solar 60 scope. Here are the pros and cons. The pros.. 1.) The sun looks crisp and clear. Sunspots appear clean and distinct. Great for viewing eclipse's and transits. 2.) I can use my other celestron eyepieces with this. 3.) It is very portable 4.) It comes with a webcam The cons 1.) The eyepiece does not fit properly into the diagonal so if you try changing eyepieces.. you WILL throw your alignment off. The scope will flip down and then you have to start all over again. 2.) No power supply. Goto mounts eat batteries for breakfast. This is no exception 3.) Goto accuracy... is very poor. Out of the 20 times i've tried to align my scope... it only worked ONCE when looking for the sun.. and yet I had to make small adjustments. I followed all instructions and still had issues 4.) The Bubble level looks like it was installed by someone with poor eyesight... looks like a sloppy job 5.) The focus knob had a CRACK and is very visible 6.) The carrying back only zips halfway down so this makes it incredibly difficult to put your stand, mount, and scope away. 7.) The webcam... though it's great that it is included... it is of poor quality. I see horizontal streaks when I tried recording the sun. 8.) This one has to do with UPS.... I PAID for next day air.. and they did not deliver on time. They were a day late!!! Overall the optics are decent for viewing the sun. I have only used it for star gazing once. It was okay. Saturn looks tiny with the eyepiece included. The moon has a purple hue around it. Must be the limitations of a bad refractor. In the end i'm still glad I got this scope but it is obvious to me that Optron did not do a good job executing this product. I really just wanted the filter and for the filter only I give it 5 stars.... the mount and goto.... fail.

Comments about iOptron Solar 60 Telescope with Solar Filter and Electronic Eyepiece:

The only reason I purchased this scope is because every single store (online and physical) that I called/emailed did NOT have any solar filters in stock. This is in leiu of the annular eclipse and the transit of Venus. Companies like Orion, Celestron, Thousand Oaks, etc...you name it...they were out of filters. I couldn't even find the Coronado PST's at all. Thus here we are. I had no choice but to order this Solar Scope 60. I was surprised that it came with a webcam. That was a very nice addition to the package. But...I did notice that the company cut out some major corner's when designing the tripod, "cube (goto brains), and the tripod stand itself. Here are the pros:1.) Package includes everything you need forimaging the sun: Solar Filter, stand, single eyepiece, webcam, diagnol, and even a backpack styled soft case.2.) Images of the sun during the Venus transit were very crips and clear. You can see sunspot activity. The background is black. The sun is rendered in orange. Some people like this, some people don't. I don't mind the orange/yellow hue.3.) Very portable4.) Solar Filter can be removed and telescope canbe used for night sky observing (though I haven'ttried this yet)The CONS:1.) It takes alot of force to change eyepieces and because of this...it can completely throw off your alignment because the part that holds your scope by the dovetail joint becomes extremely loose.2.) The Bubble level on the stand looks like it was mounted onto the stand by a person with sloppy fingers. Poor craftmsan ship.3.) The paint was chipped on the "Cube". The cube is the computer that assists in tracking4.) Attempting to align this scope is difficult and tedious. Followed all instructions and the scope was pointing in the wrong direction. It's key that the side of the cube labled "SOUTH" points south and that your bubble level is..well...level. After checking all of this and entering my co-ordinates...the "cube" FAILED to point to the sun. After manually adjusting the scope to point at my target...tracking was good. But...as mentioned...if you change your eyepieces...the scope WILL move and you will no longer be aligned. Very dissapointed with the poor design.5.) The webcam is okay. Not the greatest. On my screen I see horizonal lines. They are thick and are most visible when observing the sun. It's usb cable is rather short. It is what it is. If you can get your laptop close enough then this shouldn't be too much of an issue unless you're slewing around without paying attention to your usb cable's lenght.6.) The orange backpack that comes with it is annoying. It only unzips halfway so it's like trying to stuff a human body into a sleeping back that has a zipper stuck in the middle somewhere. The backpack is very handy but a pain to take stuff out and put stuff back in.Overall I do not regret purchasing this scope because I was able to witness the transit of Venus. A rare event indeed. In order to get past the limitations of the mount/computerized tracking cube...I mounted the Optron scope onto my Celestron Nextstar computerized stand that came with my Celestron 6SE. I also replaced the diagonal with my Celestron diagonal and i'm using celestron eyepieces. If you can frankensteign the Optron Solar 60 scope with a good/sturdy computer mount, a good diagonal and good eyepieces...then you'll enojoy the benefits of this scope.*And yes..you can observe sunspots.

Comments about iOptron Solar 60 Telescope with Solar Filter and Electronic Eyepiece:

I received this telescope in advance of the Venus Transit. I was impressed with how good the view of the Sun was through this scope. It allowed me to do and see things I'd never seen with my own equipment. The construction of the scope was great and the optics were very nice. Using the CCD camera with a Mac was a bit of a challenge, but it was very doable. I will probably add the GPS at a later date, but if you have a compass, you can get the drive fairly accurate.

I took it out at night and enjoyed the sky a lot. The 25mm eyepiece is great for the Sun, but leaves a bit to be desired for night skies. If one other eyepiece would have been included, it would have made a big difference. As it was I bought a set and am looking forward to delivery.

Overall, this is the best scope I've owned, the set up was quick and the view is breathtaking. With the additional eyepieces it should be equally as great at night. I'd rather make a solar scope work at night than the other way around. With this scope, I can indulge my need to astronomy anytime.

Comments about iOptron Solar 60 Telescope with Solar Filter and Electronic Eyepiece:

First impressions about the iOptron…very cheaply made, but the view is very impressive with visible hints of the suns corona and clearly viewable moving sunspots.

I did get the one with the GPS so setup was very easy. I just had to face one side of the "cube" south and level the mount. I used the compass app on my cell phone since I don't have a real one. Leveling was fairly easy with the bubble level on the mount.
The GPS sat was found within 2 seconds.
Selected GoTo Sun and it was within the VF, but a little off to the bottom right.
Selected Sync and positioned the sun in the center.
Tracking over 45 minutes was exceptional, but the motor is a bit noisy.
As far as the electronic eyepiece, it barely fits in the diagonal and because of a very short USB cable and the flimsy construction of the mount I wasn't able to get it into the diagonal without inadvertently moving the scope.

With it being so bright in daylight I was not able to clearly view anything on my computer even with it shaded.

Next try will be with a longer USB cord, scope closer to my back door and the computer inside the house.
